- (1) WOW ... absolutely epic. That said, I don't understand how anyone who hasn't read the book or books would find it entertaining as it would be difficult to follow if you had not, I think, particularly with all the psychedelic flash-forwards.
(2) Christopher Walken did a good job as the Padishah Emperor in the sense that everything Walken does is good. However, I sort-of feel like this wasn't a role that only he could play and there were probably other actors who may have done an as-good or better job.
(3) A subtle moment of wokeness: We never have an appearance of Baron Harkonnen's gay sex slaves. (They can't have a homosexual be a villain, I'm assuming.) On the other hand, I was expecting they would cut out the concept of the forced marriage of the Princess Irulan to Paul Atreides but they didn't.
(4) The costuming didn't hit it out of the park like it did in the first film. The baroque elements were gone and it became a little sci-fi'ish. Princess Irulan was dressed like Lady Gaga in her prime.
(5) The music was as-good or better than in the first film.
I'll keep political observations for the Israel thread.
Waited until i finished this movie. Haven't done a rewatch but it did make me want to buy the books to help understand the obvious cut content.
1. As mentioned above, alot of cut content that was just jarrig. I get it they were trying to fit it into film but there's just too much of it being cut, and half the dialogue isn't subtitled so you have to guess what is being said by body language alone, and thats a shit sucker. I'm at odds with the film but it seems to be a bust for me.
2. Walken did Squat in this film other than being name alone. His performance didn't sell me, let alone the rest of the film.
With that being said, everyone did do a phenomenal job in acting, but it can't save the crazy amount of jump edits.
3. I knew about this doing a quick wiki search/spoiling the plot a bit on the first dune. I was hoping Hollywood would greenlight it to be faithful to the source material and to actually create a detestable villain overall, but this fell short too. Just some women screaming off screen. I get it's not a horror movie, but really?
4. No problem aesthetic wise. Its sci fi, it looked sci fi, with shot of middle eastern areaish inspiration. Fit the bill.
5. The music was largely the same as the first with the same goofy bass for epic moments. None of it really made me go "oooh ahh."
All in all, the edits killed it for me. The jumps didn't make any sense, the ludicrous amounts of dialogue that we as an audience can't understand, just seems goofy.
Take this for example that took language in a smart direction.
The 13th warrior. (Not the best film but fits my example). The 13th warrior sits around the fire and listens to his Nordic brothers speak. We can't tell what they're saying at first because different language, but over the night, we pick up on the dialect and then its just English. It obviously doesnt need to be that way, but with everything having everything gutted, give us something to make serve of whatever the f*ck is going on.
I give the film a 6 out of 10.
Edit - f*ck autocorrect on phones. I'll edit the rest of my spelling mistakes on a computer when given the chance. Before that, I'm throwing this hunk of shitty glass into the trash
