Both of these points are valid issues. When I was designing the map, I wanted it to look as realistic as possible. Most maps have tons of black lettering overlapping and crossing borders. Or the maps are 24" x 36" and there is a lot more room.
I chose to make the text smaller so it would not overlap borders or other texture outside each territory. and here is the reason. If I had black text overlapping black borders, the text would be unreadable. Then I would need to have a white outer glow or stroke under the text and that would take away from the feel.
Plus looking at the actual territory names, there are not a lot of names that are too similar. I mean Mondulkiri is unique enough that it will not be confused with other names.
Does that all make sense or am I wrong?
I guess a new font could be used but this one seemed to look quite good and I am not sure a new font would get rid of the overlap issue.
