A: Because in order to fulfill some internal need, they believe in ancient supernatural fairy tales, fantastic creatures and magical beings. No amount of logic and observation will change their mind.
Since they believe their superstitions are 100% true, by default anyone who doesn't think as they do is beneath them, in need of saving, unhappy and destined for their flaming fantasy land.
This self righteous behavior is intrinsically annoying, no matter the religion.
You've been on the site awhile, and I've obviously posted a ton on here. Surely you've noticed me a few times in various posts. So, I have a question. If I hadn't mentioned it, would you have pegged me for a Christian? And, when's the last time I made any effort to try to save any of you, or get you to conform to my beliefs, or even for that matter laid out any of my personal beliefs (outside of mentioning in this topic that I eat Kosher without getting too deeply involved in my reasons)? And honestly, do you really believe that I (and a majority of Christians posting here) think of you and other people as being 'beneath' us? Would make it rather difficult for us to follow the command to be 'a servant of all' if we're above those we're supposed to be serving, don't you think?Backglass wrote:Q: Why are christians so annoying?

I've tried this line. They come back with the whole -if you can tell what I'm saying it doesn't matter- line, and... they're right. You know, the only reason this thread really offends me is because I put so much effort into not Bible-beating, not acting self-righteous, and not leaving logic out of my posts.Backglass wrote:Q: Why are christians so annoying?

As you state it does take much effort however...which again implies the intrinsic, pompous, holier than though, "my gods bigger than your god" base nature of all religions. After all, if you didn't think your way was the right & only way, you wouldn't have chosen to devote your life to it.
Call it a "religious byproduct" then.Arbustos wrote:The nature of religion isn't to instill pomposity in the faithful.
Yup...agree 100%.vtmarik wrote:Well, to the annoying, small portion of the Christian community, who feel it is their duty to harp on me about my choice of spiritual path:

Too funny.Beastly wrote:I am a Christian, and most Christians annoy me. I think it all comes down to the person.I agree. My neighbor is a retired clergyman (of what religion I have no idea). He's a nice gentleman...he leaves me alone, and I do him. We wave at each other while mowing the lawn. He then goes in his house to do his thing (Pray for less crabgrass maybe?)...and I do mine. Thats the way it should be.
Unfortunately many are not like my neighbor and feel this isn't enough. They feel they must teach my kids to pray in school, hang religious relics on courthouse walls, spam my inbox with diatribes about how we should kill the muslims before they kill us...and tell my female friends what they can and cannot do with their bodies.
All of which come from a platform of superiority...and are extremely annoying.
You can still step on their toes and say "Zip it, you're making us look bad!"Arbustos wrote:The rest of us can't do anything to quiet them, either... freaking 1st Amendment.
The problem vtmarik, is that they can't do that. They can't question their own because if they do their faith gets called into question. If you did this in any church in middle America today you risk being ostracized by the entire congregation (and potentially family, friends, coworkers) and labeled a troublemaker OR WORSE...not a "true christian". Because as Arbustos alludes, the majority are not the loudest. They don't want to make waves, cause trouble or detract from their religious cause and have to look for another church.vtmarik wrote:You can still step on their toes and say "Zip it, you're making us look bad!"Arbustos wrote:The rest of us can't do anything to quiet them, either... freaking 1st Amendment.

A: Because in order to fulfill some internal need2, they believe in ancient supernatural fairy tales, fantastic creatures and magical beings3 . No amount of logic and observation will change their mind5.
Since they believe their superstitions are 100% true, by default anyone who doesn't think as they do is beneath them, in need of saving, unhappy and destined for their flaming fantasy land4.
This self righteous behavior is intrinsically annoying, no matter the religion6.
1) While these aren't your words, you go on to defend them, so I'll start here. This is a gross overgeneralization. In essence you are attributing this negative attribute to all Christians without regard to any who don't share them. It's a bad idea because all I have to do is provide an example of one affable, non-annoying Christian and this stereotype is proven false. I present mamateo, He's a Georgian Orthodox monk and a member of conquerclub. I'll warrant that you haven't heard from him specifically because he doesn't make a habit of annoying people. Pm him if you’d like to see if I'm right. I guess I can also cite your Christian neighbor.Backglass wrote:Q: Why are christians so annoying?1
2) You've got an ad-hominem fallacy mixed with arguing from omniscience. First you speak as if you know why Christians believe what they do (as if you know their thoughts). Then, from that erroneous statement, you go on to characterize Christian beliefs as an attempt on the part of Christians to meet some internal need. This type of argument falls apart pretty quickly when looked at closely. Which is exactly why relying on logical fallacies is a bad thing.Backglass wrote:A: Because in order to fulfill some internal need…. 2
3) These are ad hominem statements. I’m going to make the assumption that by “Supernatural fairy tales” you mean Holy Scripture. I’ll also assume that by “Fantastic creatures” and “magical beings” you are referring to Jesus Christ, God, The Holy Spirit, angels and demons (of various types and strengths). You seem to rely solely on choice of words to argue here. You’ve not actually given any solid rationale for disbelieving but you don’t have to. Hey, I respect your beliefs in this area. I’m not in the least interested in converting you so your approval or high opinion of my beliefs is entirely irrelevant. The fact that you hold a persistent negative view of Christians (as seen in many of your posts this one is just a representative sample) says more about your views and opinions than it does about Christians per se.Backglass wrote:they believe in ancient supernatural fairy tales, fantastic creatures and magical beings3
4) I love this one. I’ll come back to it in a moment.Backglass wrote:No amount of logic and observation will change their mind5
6) Now I’ll take this one as a personal assessment, even though it seems to have been directed at all believers of any religion. I’m part of that group and, for myself, can I be self-righteous at time? Absolutely, I usually eat crow and apologize for it, but it does happen. This is my own particular character flaw (one of many). Can I be annoying? You bet (I was actually pretty proud of being in last place in the “Most annoying Christian” competition we had a few months back), but hey I hold my beliefs strongly and if that annoys you…well sorry…that’s something I’m not likely to change though. At least, I’ve not heard any logical or rational reasons why I should.Backglass wrote:This self righteous behavior is intrinsically annoying, no matter the religion6.
Back to four. C’mon now Backglass which is it going to be? Everyone’s opinions are there’s and we any need to defend them, or Everyone must defend their beliefs and statements.
