It depends on what you consider a cult.

Like, with Unificationism (I think that's what it's called, sorry Dan if it's not), other Christians consider that a cult, yet many people do not.
Same with Latter Day Saints, are they are cult, or are they just called to be ridiculed by the majority?

Satanist, are they are cult? What about Pagans?

It depends on what your definition of 'cult' is.

Scientology is a cult...first and foremost.

Scientology is a well thought out "tax-shelter" by L.Ron...It is sheltering Scientology's leaders from paying taxes, thanks to United States laws. It entered into the realm of being a cult when converts were and are being denied contact with family and parents. This has lead to a large suicide rate among such members. So, my opinion is that Scientology is a cult.

My younger brother was interested in it, and decided to pay Scientologists a visit down the street...they kept of showing up and calling him over and over again...needless to say, my brother got freaked out by this and just avoided them.

That is how any cult/religion grabs converts. The prime convert is one that feels lonely and outcast with the added quality of having a submissive will. So all Scientologists have to do is just keep hounding potential converts...and this equals potential income to the Church.

May this well help point out how they are different from all other:

Scientology is nothing more then a Pyramid Scheme Book Club.

I believe if the "so called church" gets religious tax free status, then all of its teaching / religious books should be made available to anybody. But they are not. They don't want you to see most of the brainwashing material until you are already a member and have accepted the first levels of brainwashing. That is why they are merely just a gang of lawyers policing the internet for their leaked documents and Tom Cruse videos.

Most religions build on family in an attempt to make an individual stronger.

Scientology starts you out paying for auditing and buying CoS books. Which gets more expensive over time. L Ron Hubbard was a fantastic Scifi writer that keeps you on the edge of you seat wanting more. When you run out of money, they offer to keep you going if you move into the dorms and work for the CoS. This apperently happens to 90% of the chuch followers, unless you are rich like Tom Cruse and can afford the higher level books.. And the final book at the top of the "Scientology Pyramid Scheme", the one very very few have ever seen. You probably need to donate over a million bucks to even see it. I bet its just a book of mirrors like in the Bruce Lee movie "Circle of Iron".

Scientology separates you from your family and moves you to live in dorm rooms. If they cant use you working the silly E-meters in the CoS centers, cleaning/cooking for the dorms or working in the CoS Law offices. You are simply destined to be a pamplet pusher in a subway handing out copy of dienetics. But for most its short lived. Scientology has a 95% turnover rate every 3 to 5 years.

All of this is just my opinion.. but I've read a lot over the years and this is what I've gathered.

I think the only thing that separates a cult from a religion is their level of elitism and what their degree of 'us and them' is, elitism really. Scientology, as seen in that Tom Cruise video, is really dividing scientologists from everyone else in many many ways.

Christianity would barely be a cult, maybe a 1.2 on the scale. Islam, 1.5. But Scientology, holy shit, a 7 or 8. (Atheism would probably be a 1.3) Judaism would be 0.

Actually, I believe I know the difference between a cult and a religion, as designated by the United States Government.

The government wishes to investigate every establishment. A Fraternity is a Fraternity only if they have provided the Library of Congress with a copy of all their documentation. A Fraternity is actually a Cult, if they refuse to provide the Library with their literature, including Training Material, Initiation processes etc. I believe the rules which apply to Fraternities are the same as the rules which apply to a Religion.

Is anybody aware of a location to search the Library of Congress for Scientology documentation?

As I believe that Scientology is very secretive, and refuses to provide the Government with this required material, I cannot believe they continue to maintain their non-profit and "Religion" status.

i've heard about them before but i never thought much of it; all i know that tom cruise and some other people are members, along with something about the members having tax-exempt status.
