Tournament Directors that actually host tournaments.

Post by Gilligan »

Idea: Have tournament directors that actually host tournaments. I have nothing at all against the directors now, AK_iceman, Hugh.G.Rection, and Steelhorse, but none of them have hosted tournaments in a long time. I don't mean to sound mean at all, but there are a few members that I believe should be Tournament Directors that host tournaments constantly. I just think it's time to have active Tournament Hosters become Directors.

Why it is needed: I believe it is time to recognize some great tournament hosters, by making them Directors.

If I'm sounding like an asshole, apologizes, I don't mean to.

I may not be entirely right on this, but I think the Tournament Directors will be doing something more with hosting tournaments when the new php Rivals system finally comes around.

If I remember correctly once that happens there are plans for big Conquer Club sponsered tournaments and such.

Of course, I might be completely wrong on that.

But I haven't seen them do anything but give out privileges. It's weird, since as tournament directors you'd think they would do some hosting themselves. Of course, I may be completely wrong.

I can understand that sentiment.

Which is why I'm calling for new ones.

Now are you calling for all new ones, or just additional ones to supplement the ones there already are? I think all new ones would be a little drastic, but maybe someday they'll implement an "assistant" role, much like they have in the Foundry now with Coleman and cairnswk.

Of course, I am not sure how you would pick viable assistants. There are quite a few tournament organizers that do an amazing job with tournaments, so I'm not sure what a good criteria would be.

Maybe not to replace the current ones, I just think there should be one or two organizers become directors. Because, quite frankly, with all due respect to AK, Steel, and Hugh, tournaments deserve more than they are given credit for.

Hugh and AK both got the job because they were actively posting tournaments (AK and Highborn were the first few posters that made a bunch of tourneys and also became the first 2 TD's). When highborn left, Hugh replaced him because he had actively been hosting tourneys. As to why they haven't hosted their own tourneys in a long time, I would guess because its a lot of work and the php rivals systems will be much better so they would prefer to wait for that.

Steelhorse is known for his table top tourney affiliation (namely the risk TOC).

It's not that I don't agree with this, it's just that if it is a lot of work compared to them, should they be deserving of this job? If they can't keep up with it, why have it?

I think they are doing just fine. ;) And as mentioned, when Rivals comes out soon, hopefully, we'll get things ramped up with some official tournaments. ;)

(Linky, not sure if this explains it though. :))

It's a streamlined, automated tournament system. It also makes organizing and running clans much easier. From the small amount of research I've done it looks like it will be pretty cool whenever it gets here.

Yep, all of the TD's thus far were actively involved in organizing tournaments (with the exception of Steelhorse, but he organizes the real IRTOC) when they were asked to be Directors. I put a hold on Organizing for awhile, but I'm working on a couple ideas behind the scenes, and like Andy mentioned I'm also waiting for phpBB Rivals to be implemented.

Who knows...

Probably after the phpBB 3 forum upgrade, but maybe at the same time?
I really don't have a timeframe for you.
