these are suspected abusers - foundary regulars

Post by rebelman »

These are suspected abusers of non foundry regulars

Suspect users: Gimil, Coleman, mibi, cairnswk, nobunga

Game number: N/A

Comments: I realise I'm potentially going to be ridiculed and laughed at for posting this but as someone newish to this site I think it's important to report what I have experienced over the last while in the foundry. I think the maps on here are fantastic and a credit to all those involved. However in recent times as I have been getting more settled on this site and confident in my views. I have decided to pass the odd comment on some maps once I have played them where I believe such comments would be of benefit to both players and map makers alike. The reaction I have received to these comments has led me to post this abuse report as I already flagged this with a mod and was told I was overreacting and they could see no evidence of what I was talking about. However I'm coming from the perspective of not just me but all new members to the site who decide to make comments in the foundry, if others get a similar response to me from foundry regulars and cartography assistants then that makes the foundry a very unwelcome place for outsiders and that deeply saddens me and I believe it is something that requires looking into.

D Day:

Having played the D Day map for the first time I made some comments on page 45 of the thread: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... &start=660

Here are some extracts from the replies i recieved (full text can be found on the relevant thread):

gimil wrote:i idnt habe this problem becaused i used a little common sence

Coleman wrote:Well, I just played through a game on this map (and I won! yay!) and the red numbers in the German area are not the same shade or font as the army numbers so I'm not sure how you could become confused.

I rather like the red though, and so do a lot of other people, so there would have to be a few more complaints I think.

mibi wrote:Once your used to bob and map without it is a bit of a kick in the teeth. so i put my thinking cap on and pretty quickly was able to pick up old modes of play, the red numbers weren't too confusing.

Now there was some positive feedback to what I said as well but for 3 senior people in the map making world to imply I have no common sense and make fun of me for highlighting what is a genuine problem is not on - ie the red numbers. The rest of my initial observations were completely ignored. There has been some movement on this numbers issue now and some back peddling by those that made these comments but that was probably as a result of me responding to their posts and being persistent with the issue something i suspect few noobs if met with the reaction I was met with would have done.

Pearl Harbour:

Like D Day this another fine map that I have enjoyed playing but when I raised an issue on the thread the following is the reaction I got from another cartography assistant:

http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... &start=630

cairnswk wrote:mmmm...rebelman, that's pleasing for me, but disappointing for you of course.
Perhaps you can contact Bob's creator and advise of new code needed.

As I am not a foundry regular he had no way of knowing whether I have any programming skills or not so this reaction was both patronising and condescending to somebody relatively new to the site who just wanted to bring an issue to the attention of the map's creator.

British Isles

I posted an observation about this map on Sept. 16 last yet there has been no acknowledgment or reply from the map maker since despite the following rule allegedly applying in the foundry:

If a Quenched map up for live play has any kinks, bugs, errors of any kind, the cartographer will be asked to fix the problems pointed out.

I know probably sound like i'm overreacting but look at this through the eyes of a new person to the site. The foundry is a wonderful place where magic happens but if they are going to be patronising, condescending, mocking and have an elitist attitude towards "outsiders" especially those of us new to the site then that in my mind is abuse and hence I have filled an abuse report for investigation.

lol, when i first got here, i too wandered into the foundry..... just stop going there, they are good at what they do, but not very good socially, and looking back on it after having played a bazillion games, the comments i made probably were right to be ridiculed. if you dont like the foundry guys that work so hard at making those maps, then dont go in there.

on a different note, they could label some of the maps better, but id imagine after youve been working on a map for months, those type of things arent very obvious to them like they are to a fresh set of eyes.

just let them be in their cave.

See, this is just plain insulting to the people that actually make the maps and go through a pretty hellish process to do so.

rebel, I can understand why you're miffed, but you're taking things way out of context. Discussion is underway on the coloring scheme of the german numbers in D-Day. Also, bear in mind that while the numbers might have been confusing to you, they're not necessarily confusing to everyone. As far as Pearl Harbor goes, yeah, BOB isn't flawless. But that's not the fault of the cartographer. More to the point, BOB (and the various other highly useful scripts) are created by people in their spare time, so it's unrealistic to expect immediate fixes. And British Isles wil be revamped at some point (probably by widowmakers, 'cause he's badassed like that), and the various territory name issues that have been raised over the months with that map will be addressed.

You're like a man complaining that there's not enough meat on his three-pound lobster.

I actually dont like the red numbers much either, not to say I think they should be banned.

You gave your opinion, they gave theirs. If they get tons of complaints, about the things you brought up... it will be obvious they should have paid more attention. If everyone thinks its great the way it is. Then clearly their opinions were correct.

I wouldnt at all be surprised to see some changes on that map though... the numbers thing is plenty to keep me from playing it too much. I had no problem figuring out brunei-sumatra, but I like it a lot better now that its fixed too.

Just to be crystal clear I am not calling for anyone to be banned or suggesting any of the above individuals are multis :?

I'm a huge fan of what the forum does and the people I have named above are some of the stars of that consolation and do trojan work. I posted this thread not because of specific issues but for what seems to me b e an attitude issue towards non foundry regulars, I have often heard this mentioned on chat and elsewhere as I had first hand experience recently of this attitude even if it was fairly mild I felt by posting it here I would at least bring the debate out in the open.

Since I made my first post I have learned the GB map creator has been away for some time so there was a very ligitamate reason they had not responded to my post.

As for the point about long posts I'm from the never use 1 word when 10 will do school ...... sorry

Rebelman, we all agree with you, they are exclusive and anti-social. But we all appreciate them too much to protest. Just don't go in there. Maybe a warning should be posted so no one will be offended. They probably don't even think that they were being rude, and I'm sure it wasn't intended that way. You know eccentric genuises.

Just post your comments, and don't be offended by theirs.

I'm not going to try to defend myself because I can't identify anything to defend against. We operate by a majority rules mentality so one complaint isn't always enough to get something that a lot of people like or don't mind to change. One comment is enough to slow up or stop production if the map maker or other members of the community aren't being very responsive though.

I am going to point out that I'm freaking everywhere on the forums most of the time and not living in this cave world people speak of, at least, not all the time.

Well, rebelman, you've dragged me out of that cave...on the subject of the Foundry Map "Cave", i'm sorry if i'm anti-social, but i simply don't have time to do much socialising apart from my cave duties, attempting to answer every post that is put to me, "attempting" to help new map makers, and trying to still make maps.

I don't mind apologising if you think you've been harshly done by, that's life. I am sorry.

The comment was not meant to be condescending or patronising, simply a pointer to what can be done to amend that situation if Bob was the issue for you. As i stated previously in that topic, i don't use Bob, so it is of no value or interest to me.

And yes, if you have programming skills that can take care of that, you could have mentioned that to me in a reply to that particular post.

Oh and btw...welcome to the Foundry, it's a magical place full of creative people who as artists are known to have the "funniest" of temperments. :)

Thank you also for filing the abuse report for investigation. You are not the first to file against me, nor will you be the last.
