a lot of times when you quote your pm and give away role information, you do the town more harm than help.
1. it makes it easy to counterclaim - the information you get may be unique to your role. The fact that the other guys now know this info, reduces that advantage.
2. it forces other players to give away information when they arent ready - since some players will corroborate your story (good or bad) you force other players to give up information they may not have wanted to give away.
3. some mods really dont like it - usually no one minds role claiming as its a basic part of the game - but as a mod, when you are counting on somewhat of a lack of information for a more interesting game for your players, to give up too much info, is unfair to the other players.
4. balance is often very fragile - when you do something that forces the game to take a change, it can ruin the entire game for everyone.
5. its typically a pretty selfish act - there are very few cases where one townie is more important than the town. Sometimes you have to look at how you can best fufill the win condition and that might be best served by stepping back.
6. mafia is a game of logic (for some) - and you distort this process by giving away information your not supposed to.
these are a couple of the reasons why, there are others and they can be stated differently. Just do everyone a favor and follow the basic rules, cause they arent that hard.

uh, no. There is a main reason that we said when this was asked long ago and was said when Mach did it before. (I read that part of the game for fun. ^_^ ) the reason is that a pm quoting is supposedly a dead give away that your roleclaim is true. IF the pm is quoted. Then it will be believed even if there are a million scum tells on you.

But what if you faked your quote? Or even if you copied and pasted would it still count as quoting?

Also u will give away your win condition and other info in your pm which can be used to find non town members, eg. scum have a different WC to town.
