Under 18 Players

Under 18 players:

Give under 18 players a specific icon to denote that there is a child present in your game or in forum.

As CC operates now, there is nothing letting a player know there is a child under 18 in the game or in the forum.

To protect our children from profanity, adult topics, etc.

If there are children playing here, CC should do all it can to protect them. If CC can't protect them, then they shouldn't be allowed to register/play.[/quote]

CC will not protect children. That is up to the parents. If the children are too little they shouldn't be here.

uhh, three things, I doubt many of them care, because a lot of them do the same stuff as adults that you'd want to prohibit. IF they don't want to see it they'll say away. and I don't think there is anything that bad, that isn't labeled before shown.

I have to agree with lack. I play on here as well as my brother and sister. All three of us have children of our own, mine being the youngest. It is not the site's job to protect them or the media's job in other outlets. The responsibility lies with the parents in all instances. If the parents don't care enough to know what their children are doing then it's their own fault if they are getting into things they shouldn't be.

i thought its a good idea .. until i read this

anyway an announcement on the home page saying that some topics / threads / forums mustnt be visited unless u r 18 and above or something

I believe it is everyones responsiblity to protect our youth. The hands off approach hasn't worked for the last twenty years, it justs absolves individuals of responsibility.

If you saw a child being accosted on the side of the road, would you help? The web is no different than our streets.

If Conquer Club was geared specifically toward a young audience, then I'd agree that we should look into ways of protection. But it isn't.

Because of this, personal and family responsibility should take the lead on protection, instead of the reverse.

This is an interesting question for a legal researcher for the following reason : the premise of this site is a game which, historically, has been played mostly by family members or groups of minors. This could lead a finder of fact in some future litigation to infer expectations, on both sides of the coin -- the one that should concern you is the possible inference of expectation on the part of CC that there would be many minors using the site.

ie : the vast majority of websites enjoy very strong 1st amendment protections, but that does not preclude some parent at some time in the future from bringing an action based on commonlaw negligence against CC.

There are two scenarios that I could envision, one serious, one not so serious. Something based simply on harm to the child based on what they read here is most likely to be found frivoulous. But say, (and let's hope this never happens) some horrific event transpires based on some predator actually identifying a minor player and coaxing contact info out of them by CC pm's.

Unfortunately, there really is no sure way to prevent this from occurring, but if you had in place some sort of parental control system it would mitigate your liability.

At the very least it would be wise to present this idea to your attorney and get his or her opinion.

My guess is that you guys are eventually going to find a buyer for the site anyway, so as long as nothing happens befoe then, right ?

Dude, this argument of yours is weak...

After all of the problems that MySpace has had with predators, and all of the suspected litigation that should have gone on there, it proves that the law can not do anything to most websites.

This website would not get Lack or anyone else in any trouble in its current state.

If MySpace and RateMe sites with teenie boppers showing their tits don't get in trouble, how do you think this one could?

i think most of the ppl that curse and talk shit to other players are the ones under 18, and anybody that brings a lawsuit based on thier kid being on the internet and seeing profanity is a bogan.

Fortunately this website is based in Canada where frivolous lawsuits for large sums of money are less common.

I've learned that once you start "moderating" something, you may become responsible for stuff that slips through. That's why ebay doesn't moderate feedback at all - they don't want to be held responsible for the feedback that people leave each other. Allthough I don't think eBay should ever be held responsible for damaging feedback (even if they do offer some moderation) apparently their lawyers have advised them otherwise.
