On this map I attacked with Nevada and the computer used my territorys on Arizona.
In my case it was no big deal, the out come of the glitch was the same as if it had worked right, but it could happen again, and ruin somebody's stratigie.

the most likely scenario is that you went a little too fast and didnt realize where you actually clicked
