A question that has to be asked. Concerning waw/cc

Post by Blue Dragon »

Hey lack - I have to ask this question and I hope it's not taken too badly but here it is in a nutshell...

Can I borrow some of your ideas here for WaW? Of course it would be reciprocal. Specifically there are some user interface things that I just love about your site that I really want to implement on mine - things that I just simply hadn't thought of.

However I ALSO understand that probably the most personal thing in the world to you is this site and I really DONT want to undermine that and steal anything.

As far as specifics go, I just love the log file frame. It is just SOO much easier than having a separate window for the log file - but its one of those things that hadn't crossed my mind till I saw your game.

Similarly, a frame for the game-chat (what we call chatter at waw) would be great too.

However I really dont want to do such things without permission. I dont think the two sites will ever be terribly similar, however a good idea IS a good idea.

Also I'd like to hear your USERS thoughts as well. What would you not mind seeing "borrowed" on another site and what WOULD you mind?

The crossword map is already generating some buzz over at waw. That I will NOT try to replicate. Even I recognize when something is SO unique it really has to stay that way - unique.

Hi BD,
As far as I'm concerned, you can borrow any of the ideas you see here at CC. In fact, many of the ideas behind CC are not my own - they came from Hasbro, other online Risk games, the CC community, articles I've read, friends and family!

Ideas are not covered by copyrights and if they were, then we'd both be in big trouble with the inventors of Risk! Copyright only protects the actual implementation of ideas, like the wording of our instructions, our icons, and the actual programming code. So I thinks it's perfectly legal and ethical for you to borrow CC concepts without asking permission (just don't ask me for the code, ok  )

I noticed that the USA maps on each site are IDENTICAL.

Which one was first?

Hrm...How about...RISK? Wait hm...no...that might be over done. ;)
RPG games are always gaining momentum, especially smaller ones. But I've always been a fan of most strategy games, so perhaps a strategy game.

Anyways, back on topic. I'm glad that CC could share a few of its ideas. But obviously some of the truely unique features should stay just as you said, original and unique.

WaW was first. The USA and Asia maps have similar countries and borders but the artwork on each site is original. Same goes for the Classic map - Hasbro was first, identical gameplay, etc.. but CC has an original design, and that is what matters.

EDIT: Tr0y, how about Diplomacy or Axis & Allies? If you actually start a web game I'd love to beta test it. You've got talent.

First..I personally congratulate you for the way in which you phrased the original question Dragon...you must have been raised right!

Troy...this may sound stupid (not surprising from me) but my other favorite game besides risk has always been Stratego.......

I would gladly fess up $20 to play.....

Koolbak, there is (or was) a Stratego site somewhere - I think it's called Gravon. I played it a while and then wondered why I loved the game so much as a kid. Looking at it now I realize it's mostly about who gets more impatient first - they lose.

Has anyone ever played the board game "Mutant Chronicles: Siege of the Citadel"?

My buddies and I have pulled countless all-nighters playing that game. If anyone knows of an online game mimicking that or even if you have just heard of the game let me know.

By the way, my first post here.

What a gem! I thought the best part was:

Somebody actually likes Crossword!

Did a little snooping around.... this site is amazing!

There are 2 ranking scores kept for each player. The first is an Overall score which is never reset. The second is a Monthly score which is reset on the 1st day of each month. Winning monthly players are announced in the Forums, and the top 6 players are automatically joined into a special Champions game. The next 6 players are also joined into a special Consolation game each month.

Plus pretty much every suggestion that has ever been made and ignored here, including: Airlift forts, Anonymous play, shuffling player order, manual deployment to start, changing the number of starting armies, different dice options (defense get 3, attacker win ties, or no one wins ties), a whack of different card options, different card effects (ie. not just + 2 to yours, there's an option to destroy all armies but 1 on a territory, an option to double them, or an option where you can choose to do either), as well as Heroes, Capitals, Revolutions, and scoreless games.
http://wawgame.com/help.shtml

Also interesting:
The number of armies on any one country can never exceed 255 (no more silly build games, but enough room to legitimately rebuild an army).
By default players who originate from the same IP address CANNOT join the same game as other players with the same IP address. (A very simple fix to the problem of multis. Games can still be created so that people from the same IP can play, but must be labeled as such.)
RULE #3 - Harassment of Females
Female players are a rare commodity. It may be the nature of the game, or simply the fact that females by and large are not terribly interested in these kinds of games. Being an unabashed female chauvinist, you can expect a quick suspension for comments or derision against them from me. (suspiciously CC has only 2 Rules. If I were a politician, I'd say that's an implicit suggestion to harass females here).
