Smoking in Bars

Post by Symmetry »

So- I was in a bar over the holidays, and I was smoking. I don't smoke if I'm the only smoker, I don't smoke if someone is eating nearby, and I make sure not to blow smoke in anyone's direction.

However, I was criticized for smoking at all by two people sitting at a completely different table (at the other side of the bar, in fact). Personally I think that bars are social places, and rudeness by a smoker or non-smoker towards others is pretty poor manners.

But what do you think about smoking in a bar? Many countries have outright banned it.

I've never smoked at a tobacconist, but it might be interesting to try.

Smoking was banned in public buildings here(England) last year. As a dedicated smoker and drinker I am most unhappy. Once when I was sat in the pub garden on a sunny afternoon 2 old biddies complained that I was spoiling their afternoon. I think they were under the impression that it was banned fullstop. I told them, politely, that it wasnt. They left.

What really pisses me off is people that go on about secondhand smoke. f*ck the secondhand smoke, what about first hand alcohol and your liver.

My grandad smoked from the age of 18 untill the day he died aged 77. He was hit by a drunk driver. They say smoking or alcohol will kill you in the end. I find people more dangerous than either.

You are probably very much correct, as I believe the United States is going to get the living shit Nuked out of itself. America no longer is America anymore, but some dark facsimile. Our premptive war policies will destroy us. We need Ron Paul NOW!

But back on topic, Smoking sucks!

This irritates me to no end. If I own a bar, who is the government to tell me I can't allow smoking in MY establishment? I own it and smoking is legal. You can easily inform applicants who want to work there that it is a smoke-friendly bar and if they do not want to work there they can go elsewhere to work! If you come in for a drink and do not like the smoky atmosphere, go somewhere else! Its ludacris, when are the people going to stand up and tell the government to "butt out"?

I agree that every establishment should have the right to decide for themselves.

It is a draconian policy.

before the smoking ban came into effect i used to go to a non-smoking bar. it was very popular, not as much now that every bar is non-smoking.

specks for itself really, unless you're a smoker you don't want to be in a room full of the stuff.

i remember when i used to go out before the smoking ban, every night you come home smelling of smoke - its disgusting.

now you come home smelling of sweat, vomit and spilled liquor. much better :P

So before the ban you had an option, now you don't.

I don't like Bed, Bath & Beyond. I don't like what goes on at Bath, Bed & Beyond, so therefore I do not go to Bed, Bath & Beyond. ;) It should be that simple.

I can just picture some whiny guy telling the bartender, "I'm trying to get smash faced drunk so I can drive some slut I don't even know to a room and have unprotected sex and this guy here is blowing smoke in my face!" :D

I own a bar and it is so crazy that they banned smoking in bars.
It has really hurt my business. The Government has gotten carried away with this ban.

Smoking is a very bad habit anyway. One you kill yourself over the years and kill others faster than you are killing yourself, in the end you'll be a lonely sob with no one to go to.

... another reason I dislike the Democratic Party. Look at every state in the US with a smoking ban, then look at the people who pushed for the ban (Democrats). Look at those who opposed it (generally Republicans).

... They (Dems) know what's good for you, better than you do.

i guess the little bit of ancedotal evidence i have suggests that having restrictions but not full bans actually tends to do enough as it is (im against the bans). Typically when you start to curb the number of places individuals can smoke, places where people still can smoke, benefit from the extra traffic (bowling alleys, bars, casinos), while other places do not get hasseled by clientel. But when you place full out bans, the places that recieved some of the benefit from the latent social pressure, end up losing business because the ability to smoke in these places is part of the reason why people go there, ive heard as much said in both casinos and bowling alleys.

It does seem like both a dumb and also probably more frequent occuring problem in the future.

Yup, now all the limp-wristed non-smokers, cocking their glasses with a satisfied smirk on their face can take in the second hand smoke when they walk on the streets past any pub.

This hasnt stopped people smoking, only transferred over to other people taking the second hand smoke.
