The same thing happened in I believe Texas a number of years ago, except it was a Japanese exchange student of about the same age, and it was Halloween. He never broke in but came top the door wearing a mask to get candy.

Well, close. IIRC he walked into the house without knocking on the door, thinking it was a friends house. And he was wearing an elaborate costume. But the clincher was it was 3 weeks before Halloween.

So yeah, you're sitting in your living room on a fall evening and the door suddenly opens and a stranger wearing bloody clothes and a mask walks in and doesn't respond to your English-language warnings to get out ... that's usually a recipe for disaster.

I found the article. They never entered the house. They were actually leaving after they rang the bell and the door didn't open, and the homeowner exited the house and shot the student point blank. He wasn't dressed in bloody clothes, he was wearing a tuxedo and it was Baton Rouge.

I've carried a firearm for most of my adult life (I'm 57), and have yet to kill anyone. {as a civilian} I taught my kids to shoot starting around 4-5 years of age. The problem as i see it aint the gun/guns... i mean i hunt and have guns. I learned to respect them and shoot em at the age of 5. So now im passing that on to my kids. This conversation has become interesting while removed a bunch from the psycho that shooted the guy that some of us think should not have entered said psycho's territory.

I suspect he welcomes further discussion of other people's guns and some people's choice to attempt to avoid guns altogether, possibly feeling safer in a country where psychos have to kill intruders with something sharp or a proper booby trap such as a suspended heavy weight.

And be open to the 'do nothing' approach. If one problem is not systematic (e.g. the occasional German stealing stuff from a garage), then it doesn't make sense to mobilize the democratic spirits to implement changes at the national or even the State level. That tends to 'fix' one problem while creating other problems (which then tend to be addressed again through politics; repeat ad nauseum).

Your 'people make 'bad' decisions when they're emotional' point swings both ways. A political system that does not let people act upon every emotional impulse they have can help to insure against emotional groundswells too.

An example that springs to mind is the UK's 'EU referendum' - the British public get all screechy and demand to leave the EU, at which point the prime minister kicks the can down the road a few years without having to worry about an immediate reprisal. This then buys time for the hysteria to die down before any serious decisions are made.
