I am writing a paper for my college Lit Class. It is a persuasive paper on whether Online Classes or Traditional classes are more effective when earning a college degree. I would like to know your opinion.

For me personally, there is no question that traditional classes are far more effective. I don't have the personal self-discipline for online classes (I'm not good at studying...so I'm a teacher! <grin>). For online classes to be effective, the individual must have the self-discipline to make them so.

I just had to vote for the third option, once I saw it.

I'm old enough to have experienced "distance learning" when it relied on the post, not the internet. I've also studied (and taught) live, and via computer (come to think of it, I've never taught online, though I did write computer-aided learning programs for a while ).
I've voted for live teaching, but I have reservations. It depends very much on the subject, the student, the number of students, the teacher, and a lot of other things too (cost, time available, venue, convenience, timetable, etc). Some of the least efective instuction I was ever given was by lecturers or teachers who bored me/sent me to sleep

Really depends on the degree and the person studying.

On-line options, like any "distance learning" can be effective ways for mostly self-motivated people to learn things held in books or given through lectures, etc. Plus, in many areas there just is no other option. Or, there may be a college nearby, but a person's schedule might prohibit attending "regular" classes.

discussions are more difficult, though obviously not impossible. (different to write something down, come back and to sit across from someone hear their voice inflections, see their expressions, etc.)

Many more "hands on" things, though are impossible to learn by remote. Also, equipment is more limited. Most people don't have mass spectrometers or even decent microscopes in their homes, just as an example.

Subjects like history, religion are perfect for online study. Many working people can use on-line material and, if close to their current profession, may have access to what they need already.

However, the biggest benefit is just that online degrees are available to anyone, anywhere who has a computer.

Personally, I prefer traditional. Tried an online class, and ended having to drop it (for several reasons, not just the preference). And at school, I have heard mixed review of it. Some doing well, others failing horribly and end up doing great in the traditional class. So it really depends on the person.

Why not have an option for both?

Both have advantages and disadvantages, but when one is on their way to graduate, they'll most likely use both of these methods to their advantage.

For example, for simple classes that I didn't take earlier, I took them online so I could hammer out a large chunk of the class in a short amount of time because it's more convienent.

For all other classes, I had to rely on the traditional classes, most of which were productive as well as efficient.

One can't say that one is really more efficient than the other since it depends on too many scenarios.

One issue in the US is that many on-line programs cannot take financial aid the way most "traditional" programs can. That is changing, but it is still much, much harder to gain assistance for on-line studies, unless you happen to work for the military or such.
