Show true time remaining in turn

Post by ender516 »

Concise description:
  • When a player is actually taking his or her turn, the time remaining should reflect the actual limit based on the time of starting the turn and the round time limit.
Specifics:
  • When a player begins a turn, the round timer (24 hours in casual play) is no longer the only factor determining when the turn will time out. It would be useful to see the time remaining reduced to the lesser of the turn timer (1 hour) and the round timer (in case the turn was started in that last hour of the 24).
This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • This will give a more accurate portrayal of how much time may pass before the play moves to the next player. Don't tell me I have until tomorrow morning if the player just ahead of me has only 5 minutes before timing out.

It's a nice idea but it wouldn't work in freestyle games.

It would work perfectly fine. In a freestyle game you know exactly when a person will time out, but if the last person is moving then you will know how much time of the hour they have left.

Ah, I take your point. Using the time remaining of the last person playing...

2-player freestyle game scenario:
Red player begins with 15:30 hours left.
Green player begins with 15:15 hours left.
The clock will read 60 minutes left as soon as Green player begins, but Red player only actually has 45 minutes.

It would be excessively confusing, even if you added a second clock to the equation.

Clearly, this is more complicated in the case of freestyle games, which I don't generally play. Since this was a comment about the timer on the My Games Active page (which perhaps I did not make clear) I would hope that the timer would be made to tell me how much time I have left, whatever that means in freestyle. But for sequential play, it seems pretty straightforward: show how long until the "traffic lights" will change based on a timeout.

Why, has something been updated? I didn't notice any changes.

Isn't this about the whole number of minutes remaining in a player's turn? I thought it was...Didn't we get an update where hte 60 minut timer starts ticking down? I must be missing something here.

Well I just entered a game where an opponent is currently taking his turn, and the time remaining is not less than 60 minutes, it's the time remaining in the 24 hours since the previous player finished his turn.

Just thought I'd add that this, in fact, has not been added yet.

That said, it definitely should be.

I'm fond of how BOB adds the real time remaining, in addition to the default time display. Can't see it being too hard to put that bit of code in (although I can see freestyle timing being tricky). I think it would be a great default feature.
