The REAL reason whooping cough is coming back is so many arrogant yuppies think their kids should not be vaccinated because of all the idiocy conspiracy theories out there. Ironically, Mexicans and other immigrants are very, very happy to have THEIR kdis vaccinated, because they know what a gift they are.

And, vaccination programs are one area that, thankfully, has up until now escaped this "show your ID" garbage. Diseases don't stop at borders! That's why we spend millions sending vaccines to other countries, even those not bordering us!

Whooping cough, along with measles and other illnesses ARE on the resurgeance in the US, but it is hardly due to immigrants (legal or illegal). It is due to supposedly "well-educated" American parents who think their kids are too good for vaccines, becuase there is a 1 in 10,000 (actually less now, but I don't have the most recent figures) chance that the child will suffer a serious consequence) They ignore the fact that measles (for example) has a 1 in 250 fatality rate when contracted! I don't know the exact fatality rate for whooping cough, but its in that neighborhood.

It's more complex than that. According to a recent NPR report, the average compensation for the vaccine is roughly half the cost of the vaccine. As a result it is a loss leader and for many small family doctors it is a loss they simply cannot afford. So parents who want the vaccine have to go to clinics that are far away and only do the vaccine on certain days with long lines as a result.
