Well said. I don't like people thinking it's a "right" from the standpoint of "well then I don't really need to do a good job because I can't be fired", but I do think that people should be able to expect that jobs will be available to them.

Even this is becoming increasingly unrealistic as productivity/per hour of work increases. I've read estimates that in order for the economy to provide a job for everyone willing to work in an industrialized nation, a GDP growth of 5%/year would be necessary. That means the economy would have to double in size every 14 or 15 years just to keep unemployment low, in other words: growing 13000% over the span of a century.

Going from agricultural to high-tech, such rates may yet be realistic, but we're approaching a point where economic growth is reaching its limits. Economic growth is always tied to consumption, and the resources we can consume are limited. Even if "making waste" were to become a civic virtue, when it reaches the point where you spend money on something and immediately throw it away, consumption, too, has reached its ultimate ceiling. It probably wouldn't come to that in the first place but my point stands, consumption cannot increase endlessly, and as goes consumption, so goes growth.

What may be necessary in order to ensure continued social cohesion and to prevent (more) wide-spread poverty is a radical shift away from the prevailing fixation on measuring nations' economic prowess by total GDP and how much it increases. Factors that could be taken into account include the width of the income gap, distribution of wealth, or even general "happiness" (a model which, as I recall, the conservative French President Sarkozy has endorsed). I by no means have anything like a completely formulated alternative, but I do think it is time to widen our horizons beyond simply looking at how much is produced and how many services are provided.

Nothing like a stereotypical predictable response to get my day going. The woman wants a job genius - why do you call her lazy? Interesting thing about scriptural references to the poor though - there is never any distinction made between the poor and the "deserving poor". I worked in the New Orleans ghettos for years and that's what i saw - defeat. You have no fucking idea what people like that girl are up against. The schools they go to are substandard, their parents (more often than not it's parent) don't have the education or intelligence to teach them the social skills needed to present themselves in an appropriate manner when interviewing for jobs and they can't afford appropriate clothing for such. To top it all off they are black - would you hire a girl like that instead of some chirpy little white chick? Yeah right.

The kids i worked with responded eagerly to our efforts when we would try to help them learn what they needed to get jobs, but there weren't enough of us to help more than a paltry few - too many comfortable white fuckwits who'd much rather sit back and pass judgement on them. Are you actually ignorant enough to think that she'd be out there carrying around that sign if she hadn't already been out there trying to get a job??

You piss and moan when they collect welfare instead of working and you piss and moan when they want to work. Ok, point taken. If you say you'd be fair in hiring i'll take your word for it. The "defeated at 14" comment really hit me at a gut level though because i've seen that defeat in the eyes of young kids and it's the type of thing that stays with you.

The attitude that someone owes them something is an attitude that's been cultivated and nurtured by our government as part of the strategy to keep the working class divided in this country so that the po folk don't upset the apple cart. That "you owe me" attitude is something we worked at dispelling. None of the kids we worked with went looking for a job with that attitude.

Very sore subject for me right now - defeat. I'm intimately acquainted with it at 59 and to see the same defeat in some kid sitting dejectedly on a curb just ain't right - not something to joke about.
