CC Dispatch [Issue 114] Moving Along

Post by Dukasaur »

Image Image

Welcome to the 114th edition of the CC Dispatch!..

This has definitely been a month of new programs. Some of the highlights:

DoomYoshi's Monthly Challenge series has gone through the next step in its evolution. If you participate in this month's Southern Eclipse Challenge, you'll find it's the first one with automated scoring. It's hard to believe that only 14 months have gone by since Doom launched the idea as a completely unofficial and unauthorized initiative. Now, it is one of the core events on the site.

On March 25th, Dhallmeyer announced the newest SoC Academy initiative, the new Guide Program. As Dhallmeyer explains, "the purpose of these games is to familiarize new players with the site and help them get started. We're looking for people with a heart for helping, 1v1 prowess not required."

On the night of April 9th - 10th, the server was down for 2 hours while some essential work was done on the CC database. A lot of it is administrative stuff that isn't very interesting to write about, but some of it had to do with reconfiguring the database to help increase speed and reduce lag, which I know will please many people!

Sempaispellcheck, former head of the Entertainment Department and now the newest Tournament Director, is launching a new program. It's big, it's ambitious, it's more than just a tournament, and if anyone can carry it off it will be sempai.

FCCFP Details
Hello!

I am looking for 133 premium players (and as many reserves as I can get) to join:
La Fédération Conquer Club de Football Polymorphic.

I have provided some details below, but please read and understand all of the information in the first post of the thread linked above, and ask any questions you may have, BEFORE signing up.

Each player who signs up will represent one of the member nations of FIFA (the governing body of world soccer (or football, for non-Americans)), and we will play friendly matches along with every competition on the FIFA calendar - from continental championships to the World Cup every 4 years, with all requisite qualification processes - starting immediately AFTER the 2014 World Cup.
Each match will consist of 5 games - 2 1v1s and 3 poly.
I will be maintaining the FIFA World Rankings - can you make it to No. 1? And how long can you stay there? :D

Thank you!
Just a little more than a week remains until Easter! We will have a mini-issue just before the beginning of Easter weekend to give you more details on all the events.

In this issue:
Swifte and IcePack bring you updates from the clan world. (See Platoon Report, below.)
DaveH, McShanester, and the Tournament Team bring you all the news from the Tournament world. (See War Games, below.)
In the Mess Hall, iAmCaffeine brings you the next installment in the Dispatch Trivia Contest, SoC contributor Macbone interrogates two of his former students, and Safariguy5 brings you another Scum Insider's report.

Platoon Report

Post by Swifte »

Welcome to another edition of the Platoon Report, where we seek to bring you the latest happenings in the clan world here on Conquer Club!

First order of business this issue: the Clan Directors and Friends have decided how to incorporate the exciting relegation format in to Clan League 7, and sign-ups for Clan League 6 are set to close on March 15th. The Clan Directors are looking for volunteers to be Division Directors. The details are outlined in the post linked, but they include ensuring clans set up, fill, and communicate their games on time, and help maintain the division threads with maps used and other information. It is an important roll and helps the whole event run smoothly, so please consider whether you can help make CL6 excellent.

This edition of the Platoon Report, IcePack brings us the March 15 and April 1 updates to the F400, where a the #1 rank has changed hands. I take a look at who joined a new clan in the month of March, and announce the roster of the new clan Phoenix in my monthly Shakers and Movers column.

Thanks for checking out the Platoon Report - best of luck on the CC battlefield to all our readers.

March 15 F400 Update by IcePack
The F400 is a results based ranking system, based on (almost) all available results that include 12 games or higher. Most league results are reflected within this ranking system, as well as most wars*. (*Unless leagues do not meet some minimum entry requirement criteria, and wars with multiple clans involved).

War Games [Issue 114]

Post by DaveH »

Image

Hello friends, and welcome to your favourite part of the Newsletter, "War Games", where you can find information about CC Tournaments, and other stuff in the Tournament scene!

We continue to deliver our news staples with iAmCaffeine's monthly update of Tournament Winners in the recently introduced Monthly Tournament Winners, mcshanester29's latest MTTO Interview with jdean1, my update of TPA happenings in TPA Wrap, and I have also added one of my occasional Tournament Tips which is an update on an earlier article taking account of the recent additions and improvements in game types.

It is with some trepidation that I tackle my first "War Games" issue, though the groundwork that anamainiacks and, before then, Dukasaur, have established, together with contributions from a great team makes it far easier than I anticipated. However, I will still need ideas and contributions for future issues from you guys out there, so contact me!

Good Reading and Good Luck!

Tournament Winners Update: March '14 by iAmCaffeine
Spoiler
Players Who Performed Exceptionally (Wins) Congratulations to all that have won tournaments this month, thank you to all those who have organised tournaments, and good luck to all next month!

Those who have won tournaments on 30th/31st March will be announced next issue.
Meet the Tournament Organizers: jdean1 by mcshanester29
Spoiler
1. How did you come up with your username? Is there something you would like to tell us about yourself?

Jdean1 was actually my old school username, so I just use for random things now. Onto myself, I am in high school and I guess a gifted student. I thought I was great at Risk until I joined Conquer Club.

2. What are your favorite types of tournaments to organize? Do you like to play in your own tournaments?

My favorite tournaments to organize are themed tourneys like sports ones or the Alpha Beta series. I play in my own tourneys occasionally, but try to avoid it so I don’t give myself a partial draw. It just avoids bad situations in my opinion.

3. Has it been fun taking over the Alpha Beta series?

It has truly been great. It is a series many people love, and I love it enough to play from time to time when I like the map. I really love the history and idea for it. I would like to take an aside to thank ViperOverLord, the original organizer of the series for allowing me to take over.

4. What was the first tournament that you organized? Did you find it easy or hard to organize and make sure everything was right?

My first ever tournament was the World Sports Club Cup: WSCC. It was a little tricky at first, but I soon got the hang of it. I did learn never to have flat rate with no round limit after that.

5. What is your opinion of the auto tournaments?

I think they are okay, yet I truly prefer the user run tourney. The user tourneys offer a much wider range of settings and themed tournaments than the auto tourneys.

6. Do you like the TPA4? How do you think that it could be better?

I like TPA4, I am just not really good enough to be a viable competitor. That being said, I am a TO for TPA4. I think just opening it for user TO like they have is great and that the whole series is great. The only thing I would change is adding a new TPA tab on Conquer Club standings board.

7. With 12 completed and more tournaments ongoing...how many have you found to be the right amount to run at once?

During school or a busy time, I think 4-6 should be your max depending on how complicated a tournament is. The one thing I would stress is analyze how much time you can spend on running tourneys versus how much time you will need to with an additional tourney.

8. Xbox or Playstation? Why?

XBOX, cause I just like XBOX Live better. My family won’t really let me have either anymore though, so its really just based off my friend’s systems.

9. What advice do you have for someone just starting to organize tournaments?

First, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Work your way up to more complicated tournaments. Secondly, Flat rate or No Spoils and No Round Limit do not mix well. My last and key piece of advice is to have fun and get creative with your tournaments. Good luck to you all.

10. If there was something you could change about the tournament scene what would it be?

I really wish there could be like a standings or bracket plugin for every tournament that you could insert into your tournament page, but that code would probably be hard to setup.

11. Any other comments?

Doodle Earth is a great map and thanks to everyone who has helped me and started me off, especially: Bahrain, JohnAarson, mcshanester29, Power Bomb and many others!

Well it's great to have a newer TO that is excited about the tourney scene!! Thanks for the interview!

BREAKING NEWS! Now just one tournament to complete as "CC Golf Match Play Season 2" which was rescued by mcshanester29 has finished after almost three years! The winner is Leehar with thrushaax in second place and mudpuppy and dowian2 sharing third spot.

There remains "A History of Europe" to finish which has been rescued by Swifte. Is this the longest running tournament ever?

The running order is: Swifte (6,770 points), dowian2 (5,445), leehar (4,542), uckuki (3,575) and arno30 (3,492) in fifth spot.

TPA 2: Standings

We have now reached the spreadsheet limit of 400,000 cells, so I won't be able to list the remaining tournament results on that spreadsheet, just the scores.

TPA Season 3: State of Play

No completed tournaments since the last newsletter so there are 33 completed tournaments and 11 yet to finish.

Tournament leaders: uckuki (7,698); benga (6,554); Swifte (5,665); Aussie02 (4,745); Gilligan (4,553). These scores have now been corrected to account for the best 8 Premier scores rather than all Premiers played.

There are 18 ongoing tournaments and 4 completed tournaments, as follows; In signups are:
IPL 2014 Quads by Clive in which, as the title suggests, home and away games are played between each team following the IPL schedule.
Masters of Standard by anamainiacks in which players play two sets of five 5-player games (1 home and 4 away) scoring points based upon their finishing places;
MC's Trenching with Triples by mcshanester29. Triples on Random maps with trench setting.
Two Step Dubs by benga with home and away doubles games in round-robin league.
Tournament Tips #52 by DaveH
Spoiler
In my Tips series, number 25 (Newsletter Issue 81) I discussed how to put into a thread a search instruction. i.e. as you would perform a "Find". Also, in Tips number 30 (Newsletter Issue 86) I went a bit further to define the various parts of the Find instruction as required in a search instruction. Since then, with all the improvements and additional types of possible game, these instructions no longer work.

Let me update some of the information in this article. The example I will use is to find Round 20 games in my "A Non-Classic Nelson Of Maps" tournament.

If I perform a Find for these games, I get, as the address;

Code: Select all

http://www.conquerclub.com/player.php?gn=&hr=N&to=A+Non-Classic+Nelson+Of+Maps+[TPA4]&lb=Round+20&p1=&p2=&p3=&p4=&order=D&submit=Search&uid=378050&mode=find
Using this as an address does not work. However, the address has a "[" and a "]" in it and these must be replaced by the codes that represent them. i.e. "[" = %5B and "]"= %5D

Replacing these gives:

Code: Select all

 http://www.conquerclub.com/player.php?gn=&hr=N&to=A+Non-Classic+Nelson+Of+Maps+%5BTPA4%5D&lb=Round+20&p1=&p2=&p3=&p4=&order=D&submit=Search&uid=378050&mode=find
This will work and I can use the formula TITLE to write a find instruction into my thread. This is

Code: Select all

[url=http://www.conquerclub.com/player.php?gn=&hr=N&to=A+Non-Classic+Nelson+Of+Maps+%5BTPA4%5D&lb=Round+20&p1=&p2=&p3=&p4=&order=D&submit=Search&uid=378050&mode=find]Round 20 Games[/url]
or Round 20 Games

Note that we now have the option of hiding reserved games and the additional flag is hr which can be N for No or Y for Yes.

If we now want to find active games then the game status (gs) now is gs[]=A, rather than gs=A as was previously. Once again these two brackets must be replaced for the statement to work.

The same is true with the Number of Players flag, np[]= and Game Type gt[]= which also have to have the brackets replaced. As are the following:
The additional Polymorphic setting is represented as gt[]=P
Zombie spoiles are represented as bc[]=5
Trench warfare introduces a new flag tw[]=Y
Parachute reinforcements are ft[]=P

In article #30 I listed the various parts that make up the Find instruction. To this we need to add these following changes (in red):

gn= Game Number
hr = Hide Reserved Games (N=no; Y=Yes)
gs= Game Status (W=Waiting; A=Active; F=Finished}
np= Number of Players (2, 3 etc)
mp= Map (Map Number; not Name!)
ty= Game Type (S (or blank) =Standard; C=Terminator; A=Assassin; D=Doubles; T=Triples; Q=Quads P=Polymorphic)
it= Initial Troops (M=Manual)
po= Play Order (F=Freestyle)
bc= Type of Spoils (1 (or blank)=No Spoils; 2= Escalating; 3=Flat Rate; 4 = Nuclear 5 = Zombie)
ft= Reinforcement Type (O for Adjacent; M=Unlimited; C=Chained; P=Parachute)
wf= With Fog (Y = yes)
tw= Trench Warfare (Y = yes)
rl= Round Limit (20 etc)
sg= Special Gamesplay (5 etc)
pt= Private (y = Yes; T = Tournament)
to=Tournament Title i.e.ContinentConquer%3A+World+Tour+%5BTPA2%5D
lb= Game Label i.e. Round+2
p1= Player 1
p2= Player 2
p3= Player 3
p4= Player 4
order = sort order (=D, newest or A, oldest first)
page= Page Number

SoC Graduate Grilling - Janomike and doublediamond by macbone
Spoiler
This month, I talked with Janomike and doublediamond about their experiences in the SoC Training Academy. One of the great things about being a teacher in the SoC is the opportunity to meet truly talented players like these guys.

Vital stats:
Signed up for basic training: Janomike (July 2011)
Graduated from basic training: Janomike (September 29, 2011)
Graduated from team training: Janomike and doublediamond (Feb. 21, 2014)

macbone: How did you first find out about Conquer Club?

Janomike - A colleague told me about it. Especially the casual game style (24hours for your turn) was interesting for me as I don't have much time for gaming.

doublediamond - Some friends told me about CC a long time ago. They all played a few games together but then lost interest. I loved it though, and I have been playing for years now.

mac: What led you to the Society of the Cooks (SoC) Training Academy?

JM - I read about it in the forums and thought that it cannot hurt to get some training to start with. I guess i joined the SoC in my very first week.

DD - It might have been in the forums where I read about the SoC Team Training too. I had only played one or two team games beforehand, and I didn't really know what I was doing at the time. I signed up for SoC Team Training and some time later I got the note that my turn had come up.

mac: How would you describe the training experience?

JM - The terminator training helped alot in the beginning, I was impressed by how much time the trainers
invest just to help and train others. I graduated very quickly and a trainer also recommended me to VioIet who recruited me for the RiskAttackers where I'm the Co-Leader for quite some time now.

DD - It was a great experience! Very laid-back, a game every now and then, perfect pace, no hurry, different settings and maps. There were good resources to read through from the start, and my coach always provided good feedback.

mac: Did your training have any effect on your playing style? If so, how did it affect your play?

JM - Of course the training had some effect especially on my terminater playing style. The team training started when I already had some experience due to playing clan wars.

But even though I was experienced there were always some inputs that helped me to improve my style. Thanx to MudPuppy, Grifftron and MacBone just to name some of the great trainers I had the honour to play with.

DD - I had played standard games for quite some time before joining SoC, but not many team games at all, so SoC shaped my team playing style from the beginning. Through SoC, I learned to play much more aggressively than I had ever played in the past. I definitely noticed a change in my gameplay, both team and standard games, and a rise in my scores. I remember I was a captain when I joined SoC.

mac: What kinds of maps and settings do you like playing?

JM -I didn't have much time to try out all the new settings we got lately so my favorite settings are escalating/fog/chained especially for team games. Terminator/escalating/7-player for single player games. But I also like no spoils and trench. What I really don't like is nuclear and assassin. :)

JM -Concerning maps I play a variety of maps but my most favorite is Poison Rome followed by Middle Ages, Arms Race, Rail Europe, Tyseneal, Germany, Canada, Conquer Rome, Charleston and many more.

DD - My favorite setting are foggy and no spoils, but sometimes flat spoils are ok, escalating least favorite. I like trench and adjacent too, but haven't played too much adjacent recently. I have not had a chance to explore the new settings either. I like playing different kinds of maps, but my favorites are probably Age of Merchants, Middle Ages, High Seas, BeNeLux, World 2.1, and classic-style geographical maps. Some good ones I haven't played in a while: Europe, NYC, and Texan Wars.

mac: How did you guys end up in the same clan, Risk Attackers?

JM - DD was in my SoC team training group and I was impressed by his skills so i asked him to join. :)

DD - That's right. Once Jano introduced me to the lovely VioIet, I was in for sure!! Before SoC, I didn't even know about clans.

mac: What have been some of your favorite games on Conquer Club?

JM - The games that led to our clan war victory against the PIGs last year and the close wars against Atlantis have definitely been the best so far.

DD - I agree with Jano - we had two close wars with the PIGs, both with some great games, and yes the ATL wars had some pretty good games too. One game that jumps out in particular from the past is this trips on Germany: Game 11457018. I remember this SoC one had a cool finish Game 12610032.

mac: If you have a day free with no obligations, how do you spend it?

JM - I would start the day with 1h running, followed by a long breakfast with my wife and our 4 year old son. We would then go swimming or to the zoo and hope that our son starts sleeping when we return by car so that my wife and i can have a romantic evening with a glass of wine. :)

DD - I would probably read if cold or rainy, go on a hike with my wife and our dogs if nice and sunny, and if a clear, moonless night, look up at the stars all night. I'm big into telescopes and observing.

mac: Any final thoughts?

JM - Many people forget what this game is all about, including myself sometimes when we have a tough clan war for example. It is about having fun and getting to know nice people from all over the world like macbone, who is one of the nicest persons I met here in CC. Thats why I love being in a clan. It's much more fun if you share your wins and losses with people you like!

Live long and prosper CC & SoC!

DD - SoC is definitely one of the best things I've done here on CC. It elevated my gameplay, taught me how to play team games, and introduced me to a great clan!

~~~~~
Tremendous interview, guys!
If you'd like more information about SoC basic training or team training, feel free to shoot a PM to either me (macbone), dhallmeyer, or any of our SoC teachers.
Newbie Help
Want to get into the Mafia scene, but don't know how to play or even what it is? Consult these threads: Mafia Information, Mafia and You, and Rules and Terms of Mafia.
Too much work? Too lazy to read through everything? No worries, you can always jump right into a game and ask for other players or the game runner to help guide you.
What is "Mafia"?
Mafia, for those of you that don't know, is a game that generally takes place in a town, where the townspeople have to determine who the mafia (or "scum") is and lynch them via a majority vote during the day and the mafia try to kill everyone at night and bluff their way out of getting killed by the town.
Mafia News
Noobsville Mafia is a new game hosted by Lootifer. A small, 9 man game, it will hopefully be a good way to introduce new players to the game.
Mafia Callouts
Calling all players interested! Some mafia games need some filling:
Sign-ups:
No games currently in sign-ups.
Seeking Replacements:
Consult the Replacement Thread to see what games are in need of reserves/replacements.
Now get out there and investigate Mafia for yourself: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=213
Advanced Roles and Strategy by safariguy5
A modified protective role is discussed this time.
The Babysitter/size]
What is It?
The Babysitter can protect a person each night. If the Babysitter is targeted for a kill however, both players will be killed.
Example
Alice is the Babysitter and protects Jack. Bob kills Alice. Both Alice and Jack die.
How to Play this Role
The Babysitter is generally played as a weaker version of the doctor. However, if the Babysitter has a good mafia read, the babysitter can play like a vengeful player and hope to draw the nightkill while protecting a mafia player. This causes the mafia player to die as well. It may be advantageous for a Babysitter to fakeclaim doctor depending on the game state.
If there are no major celebrations planned on CC, the default date for the mini-issue will be the 16th. However, if there are major events happening or major announcements, the date of the mini-issue may be moved to suit the event. In some cases, there may be more than one mini-issue. The main issue, on the 2nd of the month, will be a firm date.
Dukasaur and team (to paraphrase a friend of mine), many thanks for all the incredible work you have done, are doing, and will do to keep us all up-to-date on the many exciting goings-on here on CC - and of course, thank you for helping me get the word out about the FCCFP! :D
Update - for those looking to get into the FCCFP, spots are filling up rather quickly! Only 120 are still available as of this precise moment, so if you want in, get in now while the getting is good! Remember, the longer you wait, the less likely you are to get your favorite country.
iAmCaffeine, you missed the 5th answer. Unfortunately, the answer you provided is from Issue 105: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... 1#p4234131 (article Where the CC4 Wars Are by The Voice)
Which is dated 16-10-2013 and not July 18th 2013. I see you copied the article date, but you forgot it is the template date and not the real date. So, if you can't find the answer for 5th question, I think you can't deduct me a point for it. That is just invalid question and I think you should discard it completely (deducting a point from ffraid too).
