There are occasionally auto tournaments that require them to sign up.
You can sacrifice some to try upgrading them to a higher level.
In the future there are other planned uses for them.

You get them randomly while winning games / starting games, general activity, sometimes winning tournaments gets you stars.
As you get into the high level stars you can qualify for reward like $500 amazon gift cards etc.

This isn't meant as a criticism. BW obviously has plans for the stars, which may or may not effect every user, but that's neither good nor bad. I don't see the stars as a negative; those who use them are getting something out of it, those who don't are very much unaffected.

That's not how his development works. There was no master plan in mind when inventory was created. It was created as a framework so that as good ideas come to light, there is a way to implement them. That has been clearly seen with the other things that the inventory is now capable of doing, like the Easter event we're in right now. The conquer stars themselves don't need to ever be useful for more than entering autotournaments; they were there as a way to make the inventory have something upon launch.

The stars are largely an experimental work-in-progress. As noted, their origninal purpose was just to kickstart the inventory system, which itself has other uses, like automating the monthly challenge scoreboards and things like the CC Olympics.

The original progression of autotournaments is now reaching the pinnacle, as the Quest for the Red and the final goal tournaments are the top of an iterative progression that required low-level stars to compete for higher-level stars, and so on. Next year there will no doubt be a different progression on that theme.

The stars themselves continue to be used experimentally. We now have the sacrificial altar, which gives people something different to do with their stars. It will never be a major part of CC, but it's just a little extra mini-game and also a feedback mechanism about the strength of people's desire to upgrade their stars.

Other things will pop up as time goes by. Everything on CC right now can best be described as a work-in progress.
