When you were a kid...dream of Olympics?

Post by DoomYoshi »

What type of sport did you imagine one day you could play in the Olympics? For me it was always swimming as I spent most of my summer swimming. Funny enough, I didn't learn the front stroke until I was 18 or so.

I placed fourth in the 1500m freestyle(seoul'88). you don't get a medal for fourth, tho - it's a cruel world... :(

There's a wikipedia page on the guy who won fourth...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Cetlinski
Cetlinksi now works as an acupuncturist in Gainesville, Florida.
Something doesn't add up.

Do you mean 4th in Heat 3?

Either way, it sucks that those Soviet bastards stole all the medals from good hard-working sane people. No wonder they are all going to hell.

My pipe dreams were always oversized. I figured I could compete in all eight projectile events (the five shooting events and three archery events -- yes there are a lot more than five shooting events now but there weren't back then) plus all six fencing events plus the pentathlon. I figured if I medalled in all 15 of those events in 1980 (15 medals) I could age gracefully, not participate in the pentathlon in 1984 and be content with only 14 medals that year. Then I figured I could age some more, drop another half of the events, and be content with 7 medals in 1988. By 1992 I figured I would really be starting to show my age (as athletes go, anyway) and would probably only win sabre and prone rifle that year, for 2 more.

I like silver better than gold, so I figured I would go for only 16 gold and 17 silver and 5 bronze.

I know, eh? Well, if you're going to have childhood fantasies, they might as well be good ones. No point going half-assed.

Only sport I ever took interest in competing in was long-distance running. For the last 14 years, a bit of my right knee is missing, and I can't really run. Ah well...

In 1976 my friends and I made our own olympics. We had about 15 events.

I never particularly cared about the olympics

most of the events in the olympics aren't sports anyways. The only ones I'd consider a sport in the current summer games are soccer, basketball and tennis

I would consider those (+ rugby) a selection of sports that shouldn't be in the Olympics.

Also sorry Canada, you won't beat Australia in the womans 7s.

Oh and I love the Olympics. I initially hoped to compete in track and field, I hurdled/sprinted at the top level in high school, but once I reached my adult height - 5ft10 - then the 110m hurdling dream was largely dashed. I also showed potential at the middle distance (probably 800m or 400mH would be my event) but a knee injury prevented any continuation after high school.

My favorite Olympic sport is, and has always been, men's ice hockey, particularly when they started letting the pros participate. It's the only sport I really care about in all the Olympics.

tennis, soccer and rugby, definitely not because they already have premiere international competitions.

the FIBA World Cup is as important as the turd I took this morning...I think olympic basketball and olympic hockey are the two popular team sport competitions I'd keep in the olympics in general

this.
it also happens to be the only olympic sport that wasn't ruined as a result of letting the pros play, as the playing field was still pretty level, perhaps more so.
only reason to watch the summers for me is that michelle jenneke.

You might enjoy Women's Beach Volleyball.

While I do enjoy watching some women's beach volleyball, I won't even try to pretend I'm interested in the sport itself. Half the time I don't even need to know the score. I only want the prettier pair to win so that I can continue watching them. But it's not like I follow the sport or have any idea who's playing. Men's ice hockey is the one sport where I know the majority of the athletes participating before the first game is played, and unlike basketball, the big stars don't say "nah man, we're in the middle of a playoff chase, I'm going to rest instead". They go play. And even though Canada is virtually always the favorite, they don't always win.
