Lackattack: Rolling in Cash or Just Scraping By?

Post by Itrade »

I was wondering whether Lack is pulling in a profit from CC or just getting enough to pay for server costs and all that.

Does anyone have an answer? I'm not asking for a detailed financial report, I just wanna know whether CC is gaining or losing Lack money. Or if it's just paying for itself.

My guess is if he can afford to bring in a second coder to cut his workload he must be doing pretty well ;)

CC is definitely paying for itself, otherwise lack wouldn't keep it running. and i surely hope he's rolling in piles of cash cause he deserves it.

Agreed.

I wonder if the money is still legal tender after excessive rolling. "Cashier? This note you gave me smells of programmer!"

Go to the scoreboard and multiply every premium by 20. He's gotten $20-$25 for every gold name on there.

Looks like a decent amount of money to me...

Didn't you read the news story a while back about Lack being busted in an exclusive Canadian nightclub while snorting coke off of a chain of expensive hookers asses?

Oh, so he was that guy? Not surprising, considering at least 5000-10000 people have donated here.

5000*25 = $125000

thats a lot of money

That depends on how much he's paying for his servers... and remember - this is his only job. So all that has to pay for his living expenses as well...

Then again - his commute to work is cheap!!!

I sure hope your math is wrong, for Lacks sake.
Let's see...

Site open since 1/06 and in 4/08 there has been a gross proceed of $125,000?
Ok right off the bat lets double your number and say you were on the way low side...$250,000 Gross.
So tax that at 22% (a total guess as to percent but likely low for Canada...) and you have $195,000
That equals about $7200 a month.
Subtract overhead and labor charges and, and...

I suddenly feel really guilty for not re-upping preemie since I have been back!!!
Damn Lack I sure hope you have a good second job, sugar momma, trust fund or these guys do not have a clue what the actual income of this site is!

hint: $125,000 is not a lot of money per year. It is barely middle class and falling fast! [-X

What do you mean $125,000 dollars per year is not a lot of money? Are you kidding me? I know people with 5 kids who live perfectly comfortably on $60,000 dollars per year and they don't have to do without any of the normal necessities of life. Where on earth are you living, and what are you spending your money on?

Do they make you pay income tax on revenues rather than earnings in Canada? They sure don't here. You've got to back those costs out and then pay the tax.

None the less, I hope he's making a very good living. This is a great product that I am happy to pay for.

Whoa I did not say you could not live on 60K, I said middle class...
You know...
Clothes for yourself and not the kids more than once a year?
Some toys? Motorcycle, boat, etc...?
Something more than a hoopty to drive?
Summer house on the lake?
"Snorting coke off of a chain of expensive hookers’ asses?"
"Being featured on Canadian mtv's cribs"

Sorry to burst any bubbles but if you want to live in any big City, and you wish to do it in bigger than an 800 SqFt walk up loft, you will need to afford a 250K+ mortgage. That’s why I do not live there but it is just an example of the cost of living and it is going up fast.
I agree that you can live on much less and most do. I am just stating that ...$125,000 is not a lot of money! You will not be rich or even well off... You will be happy to just get by and have a nice retirement.

I tried a back of envelope calculation when I first saw this thread... I figure something like 2000-4000 premium. I think 5000 is a high estimate, so my guess of revenue in the $75,000-$100,000 range. Respectable for a 2-year old start up... (tough to say what expenses are... if he's got professional web hosting? how many of the staff positions are actually paid? etc.?) The bigger issue, though, is revenue growth potential... and I just don't see it.

There's no magic in this business. You've got adds, you've got merchandising, you've got user fees, and you've got personal information you can sell. Lack's apparently a purist, or he'd have done adds long ago, and the sites information selling policy is a clear as it gets. Meaning that the only payoff Lack's likely to get out of this site is getting noticed and possibly getting taken in a buyout that's too good to turn down once he has a critical number of users (in which case, active freemiums are doing something good) and/or getting a job offer.

So how to get revenue up? The current two-tier membership might be simple, but a three tiered membership could be a better way to go. Just a suggestion... lots of folks would pay for some features, like private games, but don't need to have unlimited games/speed games. Those are the low marginal costs dollars that the site is missing out on now (e.g., me... paying $5-10 for a bump from 4 to 10 games and ability to make private games would be a no-brainier).

Other than owen being right about discussing someone's personal income (up there with asking a woman what she weighs  ), you guys clearly have no idea what it costs to run something like this :)

Lets let Lack have some privacy.
If he is making tons of money and snorting coke off of MTV's ass or whatever he was doing, good for him, still cheap for you.
If he's not making any money, let him live his labour of love in peaceful poverty without being reminded of how much of a board game nerd he is for running this site :)
