Easy question about team games.

I have never played a team game before, and I just realized I'm not sure how continent bonuses work. Does one person have to control the continent, or can the team split it? If its the latter, how is the bonus divided? Thanks for the help.

one person has to hold the entire continent, and he gets the full bonus
