Oh, How The Mighty Have Fallen!

Post by Itrade »

I used to be at the top of the scoreboard, way back in the first week of CC in '06. That was way back when the high score was something like 1200 points. I fell, of course, but after a lot of map whoring (AoM FTW!) I managed to claw my way back to the front page as a captain. Then, because of a combination of speed games and deadbeating forty or so maps, I plummetted and never recovered. I played too many speed games and ended up losing ranks pretty fast, so I started a whole bunch of casual games, and then I realized that I sucked. They were still fun to play, though, so I stuck with them. Anyway, now I'm a cook.

Does anyone have stories of greater point losses to comfort me with? Or perhaps a strategy to help me climb back to the top? Or useful advice for a new cook? Any little thing will help.

I play mostly 1 vs 1 (branching out a bit now...), and on all the maps, even those where I stink, so I go up and down a LOT. (though I have never gotten into the truly high ranks).
I do think that those at the very top ... Brigadiers and up, are generally better than the rest of us, but they might just be good at some maps and types of play. It really means little.

Yes, pm wacicha. He might be able to help, but you would have to focus on terminator, esc, classic games for a while.

why those types of games? i don't think that is true. i think you want to play games where the "luck factor" is less...-0

Hey, Wacicha is the expert and that is how the training is set up. It teaches the fundamentals quickly.

Luck factor in terminator games?

Luck is just skill unrecognized in the eyes of the unable.

I have 400 more points than him, so he can't qualify as an expert.

Escalating cards (or any cards) for that matter introduces another element of luck. You already have the drop and dice, why need a third?

1) Nope, I imagine you are about the worst, I've even seen points dumpers unable to sink as far as you and they were trying to lose. You could, however, look at it this way. You are more successful at being naturally unsuccessful than others who have really tried to be unsuccessful.

2) Nope, you're obviously quite terrible really with little strategy and should recognize and understand your position at the bottom of the cc food chain. Welcome and embrace your situation and your contribution to others rise as they took your points off you.

3) The only advice I can give you is to accept the above 2 points.

4) I can only refer you to your own words....then I realized that I sucked. They were still fun to play, though, so I stuck with them.

I am sure he is impressed with your score. If you have any suggestions about training, pm wacicha.

My score was around 2,700 when I got tired of what I was playing and decided to get some medals. I started joining ass doodles like crazy. Not only is there a lot of luck in them, but what skill is required I didn't have. Within 2 weeks I was down to 1,500. After 3 weeks I was around 1,250 or something. I think I actually bottomed out as a private during my medals hunt. Anyway, most of it came back pretty easy once I learned how to play the new styles that I was trying out, and cut back a little on the doodle. So there you have it, In a month I had lost about 1,500, maybe that makes you feel better.

P.S. Some other great players who I know.
Blitz is a captain right now
OSU is a major
Scottland is a colonel

All three of them have been way higher.

BS.. Ever try playing a 6 man seq escalating game? Or for that matter a team triples , quads on a larger map with Escalating cards? There is another element of strategy to deal with. Anybody can drop men and hope for good dice. If all you play for is a drop, forts, and good dice, then your game is lacking if you ask me. Even owenshooter has won escalating cards game :D

As have I....Hoping for a mixed set is skill, I stand corrected.

We are not talking flat rate here. Just a guess if you were to jump into 50 3000+ games of 6 man seq escalating, you might be lucky to win 1. Nothing personal against you, but these games are tough as nails, shown by the low winning percentages of people who play them. Since you are not a regular 6 man seq esc player, you would struggle, as did I when I first got into the scene. So you see there is lots of skill needed to win a cards game.

I wouldn't agree with lots of skill in a 6 man esc game. True a solid strategy helps. Along with a tolerance/ability to create alliances. That is why I abhor 6 man games. But taking someone out when you have 1 card and they have 3, and finding you can't make a set, subtracts strategy from the equation and introduces luck.

Just as you are not knocking me, I am not knocking esc cards players. It just isn't for me. Not because I don't comprehend it, but because I don't like it. But seriously 1 out 50?? C'mon, my dice hack is better than that!!!

You can't cash mid-turn with 4 cards (unless the rules have changed?), and you'd have 5 cards at the end of the turn.

Point taken, though. Cards can make or break an escalating game. :|

Why would anybody take someone out with 3 cards not giving them a mid, unless they were soo far ahead it did not matter? Anybody who plays escalating cards will tell you, nobody forms alliances. Any play made by a player is to help himself have a shot at winning. Any player will also tell you taking someone out without being able to cash again is also generally a bad idea.

one of the most important aspects of the game is how one uses their troops for cards. That is why there is such a big difference between how newbies play versus veteran players. Luck plays a big factor in all games in different ways. It is the small overlooked things that is taught that can turn luck to ones favor and improve ones odds of winning.

Recommending Wacicha and the School for Cooks without knowing what they teach or how they teach is like voting for a president without knowing any details about their policies. :P
