Map Classification [Under Construction]

Post by sailorseal »

Location: http://gamerscentral.darkbb.com/Map-Cla ... on-h13.htm
I have designed a excel spreedsheet that classifies the difficulty maps, try it out.
It is not finalized, I want input from the community before I make it into a script

chipv has already compiled a Map Info Database, which is stickied in the Viewing Gallery.

As for Deciding Map Complexity, there's already plenty of discussion on the subject, with more relevant discussion in theMap Organization Project and the Map Information Project threads.

If you read through those, you'll discover the difficulty about assigning a single numerical difficulty/complexity/classification to a map, as the numbers used in any calculations are fairly arbitrary, and do not necessarily reflect the true picture...

I understand the difficulty and was hoping an agreement would be made

The biggest problem is that too many people classify anything not like the original as "difficult" because they require different strategy types.

What people really need to know is not so much how difficult a map is, but whether it uses the kinds of strategies they like well nor not. Then, within that, people tend to migrate from easier to more difficult maps.

There will always be a core group that likes maps that are based on real locations, with different shapes, but that more or less use the same basic strategies. However, those assessments have no real relevance to people who like other types of maps.

Some people hate AOR, but other people love it. Each basically feels that way for the same reasons -- it does not play like a standard area map. It is only difficult if you begin assuming that you should play it like you would Classic.

(and yes, I did make a thread on this, but it is as yet unofficial, so I won't post it here).

I understand people classify maps differently and that's fine, should I rename it to "Map Difficulty Classification"?

I classified them from a novice perspective, "if this is the first time you played each map, how hard would you feel it to be."

You also need to take into account the complexity of any instructions... ie not how difficult the map is, but how difficult it (or the instructions) are to understand.

True, very true.
I will do some testing and get a version two out

Check out V2
http://gamerscentral.darkbb.com/Map-Cla ... on-h13.htm
I hosted it at a new location ^^^

Also I adjusted values to compensate for the ease of understanding the
-Legend
-Features
-Value of bonuses
-What bonus is what

I tested it om
-The Rail series
-World 2.1

It seems to work slightly better (raised the difficulty level a few points)

Have you take MrBenn's very good advice and read those threads? Have you seen the Games Filter Script to
see how the map complexities have been attempted so far? Getting a consensus will be near impossible.
The point of the database was to avoid any areas of contention and stick to factual information which users
can choose to select maps they wish to play/get better on.

I think your intention is good, though but it needs both research and work at the moment, so a good start.

I have updated it again. I made legend complexity worth 2 features and switched over to Coleman's scale for measurement. I tested it for the first map in each section on Coleman's list and they all fit nicely into their categories.
I think classic may have been 2 into moderate but to me it is a tricky map
