http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridationFluoridation does not affect the appearance, taste, or smell of drinking water.[1] It is normally accomplished by adding one of three compounds to the water: sodium fluoride, fluorosilicic acid, or sodium fluorosilicate.
Sodium fluoride (NaF) was the first compound used and is the reference standard.[26] It is a white, odorless powder or crystal; the crystalline form is preferred if manual handling is used, as it minimizes dust.[27] It is more expensive than the other compounds, but is easily handled and is usually used by smaller utility companies.[28]
Fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6) is a cheap liquid byproduct of phosphate fertilizer manufacture.[26] It comes in varying strengths, typically 23–25%; because it contains so much water, shipping can be expensive.[27] It is also known as hexafluorosilicic, hexafluosilicic, hydrofluosilicic, and silicofluoric acid.[26]
Sodium fluorosilicate (Na2SiF6) is a powder or very fine crystal that is easier to ship than fluorosilicic acid. It is also known as sodium silicofluoride.[27]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorosilicic_acidHexafluorosilicic acid releases hydrogen fluoride when evaporated, so it has similar risks. It is corrosive and may cause fluoride poisoning; inhalation of the vapors may cause lung edema. Like hydrogen fluoride, it attacks glass and stoneware.[7]

How often is this type used?captain.crazy wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridationFluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6) is a cheap liquid byproduct of phosphate fertilizer manufacture.[26] It comes in varying strengths, typically 23–25%; because it contains so much water, shipping can be expensive.[27] It is also known as hexafluorosilicic, hexafluosilicic, hydrofluosilicic, and silicofluoric acid.[26]
Maybe we have the crap in our water because we have a bunch of greedy, corrupt, lazy, incompetent, apathetic, nonsensical, hardly-intelligent screw-ups running our government/major corporations/etc. who do not want to be accused of dumping contaminants in our rivers... so they put it in our drinking water (not mine, but most people's).captain.crazy wrote:But the kind of fluoride that they are putting into the water supply is actually industrial waste.

Mandrake: Well, no I... I can't say I have, Jack.
Ripper: Vodka. That's what they drink, isn't it? Never water?
Mandrake: Well I... I believe that's what they drink, Jack. Yes.
Ripper: On no account will a commie ever drink water, and not without good reason.
Mandrake: Oh, ah, yes. I don't quite.. see what you're getting at, Jack.
Ripper: Water. That's what I'm getting at. Water. Mandrake, water is the source of all life. Seven tenths of this earth's surface is water. Why, you realize that.. seventy percent of you is water.
Mandrake: Uhhh God...
Ripper: And as human beings, you and I need fresh, pure water to replenish our precious bodily fluids.
Mandrake: Yes. chuckles nervously
Ripper: You beginning to understand?
Mandrake: Yes. [chuckles. begins laughing/crying quietly]
Ripper: Mandrake. Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rain water, and only pure grain alcohol?
Mandrake: Well it did occur to me, Jack, yes.
Ripper: Have you ever heard of a thing called fluoridation? Fluoridation of water?
Mandrake: Ah, yes, I have heard of that, Jack. Yes.
Ripper: Well do you now what it is?
Mandrake: No. No, I don't know what it is. No.
Ripper: Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face?

In 1994 a World Health Organization expert committee on fluoride use stated that 1.0 mg/L should be an absolute upper bound, even in cold climates, and that 0.5 mg/L may be an appropriate lower limit.[6] A 2007 Australian systematic review recommended a range from 0.6 to 1.1 mg/L.[10]
Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridated water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake. Children's ice cream?captain.crazy wrote:Ah, yes... thanks for that. I would also like to point out that the recommendation for adding fluoride to water came from the NHO.
