I agree. The analyzation of various works often takes all the enjoyment out of reading them. It's kind of hard to enjoy a book when you have a five page essay about it due at the end of the week.PLAYER57832 wrote:Having to read some of these things in high school is, ironically, what often ruins them. You would not pick up a Quantum physics text without knowing some basics first, but teachers somehow assume kids are supposed to go with ease from Sponge Bob to Charles Dickensen.

Ah, so peel back the outer Furry layers, and we find an actual layer of intelligence! Whatever next Lucaril?Lucarilover240 wrote:I agree. Yes very much so. While there were no actual required books to read in my literature class, the teacher was pretty obvious about us needing to read some books ("I'll glare at you and fail you if you don't put this book on your list."). Because of that (and a number of other factors) I have come to loathe dutch literature.PLAYER57832 wrote:Having to read some of these things in high school is, ironically, what often ruins them. That's because it is really for that age group. Too many others are not. And, while teenagers are certainly approaching adulthood or adults in many respects, they lack the perspective of many experiences. It does not mean teenagers are dumb or incapable, but its sort of like reading a book on "how to have a good time in retirement" or some such when you are 30.xelabale wrote:I agree - Hardy was a boring bastard and I'm from Wessex ffs. I know what you mean about having to read books at school ruining them, but we had to read Lord of the Flies and that was/is awesome...
jesus you are awfulLucarilover240 wrote:I think mine would be The Great Gatsby. I read it recently for my english class. It might be one of the classics, but I just don't see what's so great about it. For the most part, it's pretty much just some guy talking about what he did over the weekend. The only two somewhat exciting events in the book were when Mrs. Wilson got hit by the car, and when Gatsby got killed. Other that that, I just wasn't able to enjoy it.

i would hold out hope that someday you will grow up, learn to love good stories when you can read them outside of all that high school "spot-the-symbolism" bullshit... but somehow i think you'll still be jerking off to cartoon dogs when you're 30, complaining about how much reading you have to do for your job at the autozone
