What would you have done?

Post by pmchugh »

Ok so I passed my driver's test a few weeks ago and so I have not been driving for long. I went to asda today in my mum's car, just to get something for dinner as my parents are on holiday. I could have parked anywhere in the hundreds of free spaces but no I decided to park in a small smapce near the entrance. Well you can see where this is going, I was trying to fit in and whack I hit one of the other cars. I reversed and then parked in properly before assesing the damage.

My car's bumper was out of place and it was marked with paint from the other car, it looekd pretty bad but there care had only a very small scratch. A women told me to report it to customer services as I had scratched the other car even thoguh it was very small. I said I would but didn't.

Now comes the stupid part. So I get back to my car and reverse out of the spot, I stare at the car in front trying to see if the scratch was noticable and bump I hit another car parked behind me  . I put it in first and leave like it never happened.

The second one wasn't as bad, it's barely noticable on my car although I never checked the one behind me I just panicked and left. I couldn't believe I done it twice and didn't know what to do about it so I left my problems in the car park. Well all excpet one, my mum's car is marked at the back and front, I managed to heal the front a bit but my dad will notice when he goes to clean it (as I said they are on holiday). I am planning on telling him about the front but not the back, I don't have the guts to say I did it twice

What would you do? Should I have told the people at Asda about the bumps?

Wouldn't happen my homeboy/girl(?). The key is to drift into the parking space. I found, of the cars I have, the Charger, Eclipse, and BMW M3 Sport(Rally edition) seem to be the best at this.

However if I did suck at driving, I'd 'fess up.

First off asda? What is that? O_o

Second, it'd be hard to admit your mistakes espeically when you do it right then, but it is the right thing to do. Though I must inquire about this woman who told you to report did. Did she she the whole scene, and do you know if she saw your license plate? If so, to both, you may be in more trouble for not doing anything. From my personal, 16 years, of experience, you get off with less if you own up to it rather than being caught in the act or told on.

Please forgive me for laughing out loud at your "backing up incident". To be honest, that's exactly how second-accidents happen...your mind is so involved with the first one that you're not paying attention to what you should be NOW. Been there, done that (though never with a car...heh).

At any rate, I don't know if I would have told anyone at ASDA (is that a restaurant?), but I certainly would have left a note on BOTH of the other cars with my name and phone number. Yeah, the insurance will absolutely go up...but one thing I've learned is that I have to respect myself and that means fessing up to mistakes I've made, no matter how painful.

Funny thing is...owning up to the first one probably would have helped you to avoid the second one.

Oh, and the first two answers in your poll are identical, aren't they?

Now, I have a question for you...one of the things I use in my classroom are situations I call "moral dilemmas". It gets the students used to listening to each others' reasonings for things and also gets them used to expressing their own reasons for things. May I have your permission to use this situation in my class (not using names or anything, of course)?

(Ok, I'm gonna anyway, but I figure I may as well be nice and ask, right?)

Asda is a british supermarket. I know you get in less trouble when admitting it, but the temptation is you get in no trouble if you get away with it. I don't know if she took my regi but I doubt it as I said I would report it and I'm sure at least one person probably saw me hit the second car, but i am hoping on people not being tight enough to take my plates over such a small bump.

Feel free i am glad someone is benifiting I feel bad enough about the other cars  I know I should fess up and if I were in your class I would say I would have done, but it's a different story when your actually there.

Also the insurance is already ridicuolously high being a 18 year old male who just passed his test, and now I see why

ah I see, and as Woodruff said, it would have been better off if you just admitted it. Though now we know of even more scumminess you did. You lied to the woman saying you'd do it but you didn't. XD But really lying is bad... And the note trick was another idea I had that'd be easier to deal with than informing people but also effective. ;)

Also I would have put a you in the title between Would and Have ;)

That is absolutely true! Talk is cheap and it's very different when you're actually faced with any situation in reality rather than theoretically.

And for what it's worth, I also make sure my students understand that I'm not wanting them to just give me "the answer they think I want to hear"...the class has non-attribution tied to it in those sorts of discussions. Otherwise, nobody'd ever learn anything about themselves.

I do remember having the same trouble myself ("How can anyone park in these horribly narrow parking spaces?!?!?!?"). And my daughter had a lot of trouble with them when I was teaching her how to drive, as well.

Mmmm...indeed. A point I thoroughly overlooked. As a parent, I'd be more upset about the non-telling than I would be about the accident itself (and how not to laugh when you tell them about the second one...the challenge of being a parent right there!).

I put the bumper back in after some jostling and most of the paint was easy to remove. The worst part is where it has actually scraped the car, once above and once below the bumper.

I think I will admit to the first one, as it's definately visible when you look. But the back just has a few marks that are hardly visible so I will hope it goes unnoticed and blame it on someone else if seen  One mistake is bad enough but for two I am not sure they will let me drive it again!

Sorry about that...I was "merging" my posts...it's up there. I just took the three back-to-back-to-back posts I had made and merged them. I always hope I'm quick enough doing that so nobody notices.

One thing to keep in mind...if there was a witness, your parents WILL find out. They'd rather hear it from you than from someone else (like the cops). I know...it IS a calculated risk, either way. But if they find out from someone else, your odds of ever driving again are FAR, FAR slimmer than if you had admitted it to them up front. Ya' know?

Well, to be completely honest.....You're not just a poor driver but a coward and a pussy for this double Hit and Run episode. Sorry but that is my stance. If my kid did that, I would FIND both cars and have him confess, apologize and take his lumps (of course my kid wouldnt run away).

I EVER catch anyone trying to run off after mashing into my truck, it will be a very sad day for them.

Grow up kid :(

heres what I wanted to quote. I don't plan on telling them about the second only the first, personally I am too prideful to admit to being that stupid.

And as I said I fixed the car to a degree i can take a picture if you want and you can judge for yourself. It looks a lot better now than it did at first that's for sure.

Your entitled to your opinion and I take anything on the internet with a grain of salt.

But you are taking an all high and mighty stance without actually putting yourself in the situation, as an 18 year old. My mate sitting beside me was telling me to just go and I'm sure that over 50% of people my age would have done the exact same thing. And I'm sure your not perfect, I am not an idiot I know what I did was wrong but I did it anyway. You never had a moment like that?

Coming clean with what happened is much better than losing sleep worrying that someone might report the incident. A hit and run sounds much worse than a minor accident. One aspect of the driving privilege is acting responsibly and being accountable for what happens when you are behind the wheel.

pmchugh wrote:I said I would but didn't.

The problem with telling a lie is it doesn't stop with one... and this incident isn't over yet.

pmchugh wrote:Should I have told the people at Asda about the bumps?

Yes, you should have done the right thing and told someone. This stuff happens... it scared the crap out of you and you made a bad choice. Since it happened today, consider going back and telling someone. If it is a "minor accident" with minimal damage as you say, it's quite possible no one will care and your conscious can be clear... and tell your parents "exactly" what happened when they return. IF you allow them to make this discovery for themselves, how can you expect them to trust you with the car (or anything else) in the future.

pmchugh wrote:I am not an idiot I know what I did was wrong but I did it anyway.

It's a minor accident, not the end of the world. You can still make this right.

pmchugh wrote:You never had a moment like that?

This is pathetic. You actually have to ask what to do.

First, keep lying to everyone.

Second, keep a small bag with toothbrush packed under your bed.

Third, keep about $500 cash in the jeans pocket in that bag.

Fourth, be ready to run like hell when everyone finds you what a lying twit you are.

OR

Tell the truth, pay for the damage, don't drive until your frontal lobes develop a bit more.

He isn't really asking what to do (it's mostly already done, after all). He's asking what we would have done and gathering opinions on the matter.

I don't blame him for "lecturing" a guy who spells "cool" with a K.

Personally, if any of MY kids made such a disgustingly silly and cringe-worthy spelling error (especially on purpose), I'd take out the whip.
