Best image format to use?

Post by wcaclimbing »

It seems like with every kind of save file I have tried, I lose quality when I save my pictures.

I like to use .bmp, but Photobucket likes to convert my .bmp to .jpg.... .jpg makes my pictures lose quite a bit of quality, and I was wondering if there is a better format to save my pictures in, so I can keep all of my image quality.
.gif? .png? I don't know...

edit: i need this for my map thread.
see my sig? i made it .bmp, photobucket converted it to .jpg, and it looks awful. The quality was so much better as .bmp....

no, .png is the best because it uses layers but doesn't smear

gif is horrible for almost anything, it only supports about 265 colors. PNG it probably hte best to hold quality, if you save it as a JPEG you can sethte quality as high or as low as you like.

Personally I use PNG but lack converted feudal war to a jepg to reduce hte image size to about 100kb. This may be a factor for you to take into condideration since your using graphics similar to feudal which may end up at high quality.

jpegs give you low quality? If you're working with Photoshop, you can save them to "12" quality, which doesn't give you any fuzzy compression. Also, on photobucket, if the original image was saved as a high-quality jpeg, you shouldn't lose any quality when uploading it (look at the images of my map here: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... &start=373). I think you only get compression on photobucket when uploading a .bmp.
One last thing. A few people have said that pngs work good, which is definitely true. The problem is, pngs often have a larger file sizes. I tried this out for myself on my map, and I got a 515 KB file with jpeg ("12" quality), but when I converted it to a png, the size jumped to 919 KB. So if you can get the same quality with both formats, I'd stick with jpegs. Lack will most likely convert your map to a jpeg anyway :)

If your best program is paint you are going to want to use png.

If you understand the compression settings in a higher end graphic program you could probably use jpeg still. Like pep said.

jpg at the highest setting. lack will then lower the quality to reduce the size.

Technically - JPG is a "lossy" format...

PNG is a "lossless" format...

Therefore PNG is better...

I went with jpg on highest quality, like DiM said, and it worked great.

My sig is still bad quality, but the full quality version is up in the map thread. (if you want to see it, click my sig).

Thanks everyone.

Remeber take the image size into consoderation, lack will reduce the image size to a suitable size as to not eat up to much bandwidth.

it depends if you want a pixelbased format than its png but, vector images are in principle way better.
