SELLING OUR GOVERNMENTAL POSITIONS

Post by b.k. barunt »

I see that the governor of Illinois is in trouble for attempting to sell a senate seat. WTF? Didn't George Bush jr. and Gerald Ford do the same thing with the vice presidency? Am i missing something?

Is this thread somehow from like a month ago? Or does BK live in a bomb shelter so it takes a little longer for the TV airwaves to reach him?

Well, a month ago i was in the Louisiana backwoods, which has somewhat less internet than a bomb shelter. Has the governor of Illinois been under indictment for a month? Same question though, if it's not too hard for you, what's the difference between what he did and what Ford and Bush did?

Technically, for those of us in Illinois, we knew about his corruptness even before his election. Hardly anyone I've ever talked to wanted him for our governer. If you're wondering why he was voted in, the other candidate was Judy Barr Topinka, who was an even worse option. At least as far as corruption goes. And yes, this investigation has been public for about a month. He lost his governorship like 3 weeks ago. Blago claims to have done nothing wrong, and that he's been set up. Why would he be set up you ask? So that he could be replaced by Pat Quinn who is for raising IL state income tax 50%, cigarette tax $1, and other taxes like property tax. All of which Blago was fighting hard to stop appearantly. Too late though, the taxes have already been raised.

And as far as Ford and Bush, I dunno. I think that you'd have to be more specific. Are you talking about supreme court, cabinate, or general government appointees? Perhaps it really is a set-up. Or the difference is the fact that he was caught saying that he wanted $$$ for the job.
But Blago is on tape saying that he isn't just going to give the senate seat away because it's too valuable. In fact his appointee has admitted to being asked to help raise campaign funds for Blago.
Then there's also the case of giving high paying government jobs to his family, and then raising the pay. Trying to take funding away from a childrens hospital that refused to donate money to his campaign, and trying to use his position to get his wife a high paying charity job. He's got an uphill battle let me tell ya.

Not long ago he was impeached as Governor of the State of Illinois... for attempting to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder. Which is pretty funny stuff considering a big part of his election platform was anti-corruption and to add extra entertainment bang for the buck he did the talk show circuit proclaiming he never had a chance to tell his side of the story as Illinois was in the process of booting his sorry ass out of office. Guess he'll finally have an opportunity to spill the beans and um... put his political career back on track.

Does Louisiana still have the voters' appreciation for "colorful" politicians? Maybe B'vich should escape the windy city and head south?

I would bet money that Louisiana is the most corrupt state politically in the Union. Just to sit through misdemeanor court on any given day and observe the crooked judges and obviously lying cops would leave most of you in a state of shock.

Edwin Edwards, the most popular governor (and the most openly crooked) for the 36 years that i've lived here was clearly convicted of racketeering in the casino business, and yet almost a million signatures were collected on a petition to let the poor man out of the country club jail that he's in. Hell, they don't have much more than a million people in Louisiana that can read and write.

A friend of mine that was a respiratory therapist was fired unjustly from a hospital to cover some doctor's ass in a malpractice suit. In spite of blatant evidence to the contrary, the judge found for the hospital. My friend appealed the judgement and the appeal was turned down. Come to find out that the judge who turned down the appeal was the same one who rendered the verdict in the first place.

I could write a fooking book about just the things that i've witnessed personally.

Dug the gardens for my wife, and used to go crawfishing. Haven't gone since my big bike wreck in 93, as it's too much work with my crippled foot/ankle. Still eat a mess of them though.

hundred pounds... dem bugs is hard to beat.
and I still get cravings for 'em. Poo Yiii ! ! !

I remember Dave Treen as Governor... all he did was quietly get things done and made improvements
BUT... he wasn't "colorful enough" to get re-elected. Ha ha ha!
