I didn't have to ask, and I am not panicking I was just wondering what others would do in my place. These are just spiteful comments, idk about your opinion.

Haha, I had a similar incident in an asda car park straight away after I passed my test in Winter 07. Basically, I fucked my parking up completely and had it in such an angle that the car next to me couldn't get out, but if I tried to move it I would probably crash it... so I rang my parents up went off to do my shopping then left them to deal with the angry woman who I had fucked the parking up. Somehow, the incident ended without a scratch to either motor.

Interesting thread. Problem is that we're dealing with 2 different questions. 1: What SHOULD one do; and 2: (the one he actually asked) What WOULD YOU do. Human beings being what we are, the 2 are not necessarily the same.

#1 is fairly easy: fess up completely. Reasons? A: Ethics 101, it's a no brainer, right thing to do. B: As has been clearly stated, the consequences are much worse if/when you get caught. C: As has been hinted at, the anxiety of waiting to get caught is bad for your mental and physical health.

#2 still has 2 parts: A: What would I do now, and B: what would I have done when I was 18 like you and didn't know what I know now.

A: After 30+ years of driving I still have occasional parking lot incidents because I'm a daydreamer and scatter-brain by nature. I can tell you without guessing that I would fess up completely to the other owner, leaving a note if necessary, with my phone number. (After having severely banged my head on the steering wheel, and assuring myself by various means that this is not just a bad dream from which I'm going to wake up shortly) However, this is also after 30+ years of claiming to be a radical Christian and trying not to be a hypocrite about it. It's also after 18 years of being a parent and being painfully rebuked by my conscience when I don't live up to what I would tell my children to do.

B: At 18, I very likely would have done the same thing, but if you're looking for encouragement here to do anything other than fess up completely, consider this. I don't know what you do or don't believe in, but I have argued with a lot of the atheists here in CC, and everybody for whom I have any respect has a set of ethics that they try to guide their life by, and "most other people would" is never part of it. Consider who you want to be 30 years from now.

I recommend writing your parents a note. That way you can let them know that having thought about it you want to do the right thing, but you panicked at the time. That's a bit more excusable. Just hope they read the whole thing before they act. Then they can help you figure out where to go from there. It may be too late to contact the other drivers, but it's never too late to do the best you can do now.
The right answer to the wrong question is still the wrong answer to the real question.

I put the bumper back in after some jostling and most of the paint was easy to remove. The worst part is where it has actually scraped the car, once above and once below the bumper.

I think I will admit to the first one, as it's definately visible when you look. But the back just has a few marks that are hardly visible so I will hope it goes unnoticed and blame it on someone else if seen  One mistake is bad enough but for two I am not sure they will let me drive it again!

I see. In fact, we ALL see. Growing up, being an adult is much more than a turn of the calander.

As for "different when you are there", I would be willing to bet that most of us have been in very similar situations not once, but several times. AND we have all likely been on the other side -- having to pay for damage people like you decided they would simply push off onto other people. You worry about not being able to drive. What of those who parked their cards to find you damaged them?

Hopefully you will learn responsibility AND better driving before you truly hurt someone.

For the last two comments I appreciate your advice.

tbh I didn't think the damage was really that bad, but I guess it doesn't matter.

As for my ethics well I am an athiest but that doesn't mean I don't care about others. I feel pretty bad for the damage on the other cars but tbh I am sure it's nothing a bit of car polish couldn't fix. It's not like I took off a wingmirror or left a dent. Admittidly I don't know about the second car as I never looked but by then I was just panicking.

You should have stayed and told about the damage.

It wouldn't have happened to me. Not because I'm some crazy good driver but because I'm so paranoid about hitting other cars, I would have parked about a mile away from anyone else or taken 23 moves to get into a parking space that I could have just rolled into with one.

I'd be curious to know how much the poll results actually correspond with real life. Cynic that I am, I hesitate to believe that everyone who said so would actually fess up should this actually happen to them.

To the OP, a large part of being a good/better driver is knowing your limits. I hope you've learned from this experience something about your capabilities as a driver. In the near future, avoid challenging parking spaces (even if it does mean a less convenient spot) and be sure to try and be extra cautious and alert when you have been flustered by something. Being upset/nervous and driving is not a good combination! In the longer term, work on your parking skills and this sort of thing wouldn't happen. Above all, I beg you not to let this become a pattern.

This isn't your ethics. It's your disbelief in one specific idea.

This is a very small part of your ethics. Your personal ethics are essentially the set of personal philosophies which you live by.

Hmmm...perhaps LEGALLY, that is true. However in reality, a criminal is one who commits a crime (being caught and convicted is irrelevant).

Yet here you are, an allegedly grown man, flaming people in the middle of a civilised discussion.

Strangely hypocritical behaviour you might think, coming as it does from a man who seems to be so rattled by 'juvenile blathering'.

Sorry, but I'm still struggling with two concepts in your story:

1) You actually decided to park between two cars when there were "hundreds of free spaces" available, just because it was near the entrance? LAZY

2) You decided to inspect the damage of the first incident while reversing out the space, as opposed to doing it before getting in your car!? FARKING STOOPID

Frankly you deserve to be caught for these reasons alone. :P

Well hell, I do that sort of thing at least once per week. Granted, I AM lazy, but still...I think this is pretty common practice. Why MAKE work for yourself, after all?

Yeah. But it does make the story much more hilarious! So that's a positive.

man this isn't really my week.

I got home today after dropping off my sister for a night out when i realised I didn't have my house keys with me :x As I said my parents are on holiday and the only other person with a key was my sister who wouldn't home till like 2-3am. So I got out my mobile and tried to phone her before realising that her phone was stolen just the other day and she was using my mums old phone for which I don't have the number, I tried phoning everyone to get her number but no-one that answered knew it.

So i was gonig to have to either drive round glasgow trying to find her ina few clubs or sit here till 2am. I went round the back and tried the back door trying to play my luck but it was locked. But then I noticed that one of the windows was open a crack. I went over and pushed it wide open and I guess you know where this is going. Thing is the window was pretty narrow and too high up to get in, so I piled up a chair and a plant pot and stood looknig in the window for 10 minutes. I couldn't get my leg up so I was left with one option, dive in head first. Well I got about half way through the window with the chair kicked away and my head stuck in the blinds wondering if anyone was calling the police thinking I was a rather shit burglar. I untangled myself and pushed my self inside and onto the floor, my t-shirt is ruined but I got in :D It was quite worrying though as anyone could have got into my house
