Add in a “thumbs up” feature to this forum.

Post by zen330 »

Some forums have this feature built in whereby people can “thumbs-up” a post (see an example thread from a good open-source website below), or even add in another icon (like “thinking”). I like this idea as it is a way for people to express support for a post without taking the time to write it out in a reply, providing a bit of extra encouragement for good ideas and giving the site additional information about what people here would like to see.

I’m wondering if this forum software has this feature built into it (or maybe via some already-made, well-functioning mod), and if so if this site would enable it.

The above post perfectly illustrates the need for a thumbs down feature within the forums....

Some sites have just the net figure, others show the upvotes and down-votes separately. Which would you propose? Either way, it would have to ensure that any individual can only vote once per topic, although they should be able to withdraw their vote by clicking the same option again.
Sadly I can see people getting upset and reporting abuse just because they get downvoted; experience elsewhere suggests that some people can't deal with the concept that they, or their ideas, are not as popular as they think they are (or should be).

This was actually an issue from the past.

What you are stating as down-voting actually fits perfectly with the old feedback system that was here.

It wasnt a star system, it was actual feedback with just a positive, negative, or neutral tag, and whatever the person wanted to type out about said person..

There was an issue i encountered with a player. His original username was RyanC, or something of the sort.
Anyways, he left me a negative feedback, and I guess he got sour because I foed him after..

Guy made over 200 multi accounts just to troll join the games of myself and the mods at the time that banned him for his original few multi accounts he had made... He ended up joining tons of my games just to leave lines of negative feedback.

But it was run by lackattack back then.. And having issues dealt with were actually a lot easier....

So, in a sense, to the person that threw out said idea.. Conquer Club has gotten away from that possibility long ago. Why go back to it? Horrible idea.

@Apatheist (does doing the @ thing on this site give the @-ed person a notification?):

My proposal was not for threads as such (as viewed from the main forum page) but for individual posts in a thread, for example owenshooter (though he gives no reasoning why, which seems a bit strange if one is going to make a post disputing an idea..) would presumably click on the thumbs-down icon if added to register his general disagreement with my initial post here, which would show up under my post itself.

From what I’ve seen on this site the mods don’t seem very censorious at all (I note that gcwca here seems very negative and unhelpful and yet is allowed to post freely, including for some reason on the threads I have started despite him being on my block/ignore list (he is the only one currently on those lists btw)). There also seem to be plenty of staff/admin/mods on this site so that any excessive flagging of forum posts could presumably be dealt with without too much strain on the staff.

In any case my proposal was for positive and neutral icons instead of negative ones, though if the site wanted to do a net +/- score or have both positive and negative icons those could be viable as well I think.

I'm amused..

I'm negative?
Wham..
I'm "realistic"

Yeah, that's the phrase you was really looking for.
Don't worry I'll be a dick from now on to you though.

All I did was declare the fact that what you suggested is exactly like something they did away with 15 years ago, a process conquer club trashed completely.
And you had to be a sour weak spined crybaby and get sour over it.

What i stated was facts and exact recollections of what the feedback system was, which is pretty much exactly what you were suggesting.
If you can't handle the truth you need to go back to bed and stay under the cover.
Pretty sad. Can't be a grown adult, only kids get that hurt over nothing.

Oh, wait, everyone is soft these days. Weak. Grow up.

There is a button at the top that says Player.
It puts a bracket in the text field, and you can put a players name in the middle of it. It makes it a clickable link.
Like so.

That creates a link to the player's profile, it doesn't send a notification that the player has been mentioned in the conversation, which is what the original query was.
I can see that one gets notifications if one is quoted, but can't see anything about the @ tag.

OK thanks, I will try to use the quote function if I want to notify someone of my replies to them here in the future.

It won't notify. It just makes their name a clickable link to go straight to their profile.

zen330

See, it didn't notify you that I tagged you, did it?
Of course not.
But you are going to claim that this is me spouting ignorance because your mind isn't able to process true knowledge, right?

For those that just didn't know.
It was suggested back in in 06..

And once again in 2009, and again in 2015, and again by someone else in 2018 I believe.

Yet again, why would suggesting it again make it happen?
It's obviously failed too many times. Give it up.
No thumbs up, no rating forums. .they have polls and that's really as far as it needs to go.

There are 27 pages of suggestions. And every time it was posted it got less and less support.
Do some research. Almost everything that has been suggested in the past 8 months is just a repeat of something already ignored by admin and mod teams.

yeah, if you're too lazy to type *thumbsup*, maybe you don't like it as much as you think you do. I remember hating this when fb added it years ago - just seemed lazy and disingenuous to me...*shrugs*

Yeah yeah yeah. At least there is a point to trying to resurrect flame wars from its grave.
It was a well needed use of its time of server space.
Where as flooding the server with thousands and thousands of likes that take up space just to tickle someone's ego.. that's pointless.

Ya know, me trying to bring Flame Wars back at first was nothing but a gag and I was using it just to troll those against it, but now I'm gonna get serious about it. Just for you.

I don’t think anyone running the site comes in this forum. You can probably just use it for flamewars.

Admitting defeat while not acting like you overlook everyone. Surprising, but commendable.. I guess.

There are still plenty of mods that enforce rules in the forums, weather the owners pay attention or not. Just saiyan.
